Merry Christmas'

From Craig Baird:

From Bruce Gabrielson:

"Wuz da nite befo' Christmas"--Margaret Steele

Wuz da nite befo' Christmas an' from hea to Wailuku,
No creetcha wuz stirrin' not even one uku.
Da Keikis wen snuggle down safe in da beds,
Big dreams of tofuti wen dance roun' da heads.
An' me wid my Primo an' Ma wid her poi,
We jus' settle down fo' one rap, - when oh Boy!
One awful big clatter come from da lanai,
I tink maybe coconuts wen fall from da sky.
I wen jump up so fas' I knock ova da chaia
I wen run to da puka to see what stay dea.
All ova da beach da kine silva moonlight
On da sand an' da sea it shinin' so bright,
I can see all da tings on da sho' plenty clea,
An' I see sumting out dea dat stay mo' plenty quea!
One tiny surfboard lyin' der on da groun'
An' eight tiny sea horses jus' swimmin' aroun'
An' one little ol surfer so lively, so quick, -
I wen tink to myself, "Ey, brah! Dat Saint Nick!"
He wuz chubby an' jolly, da kine roly poly,
An' dressed all in fur fro da chin to okole.
He had one white beard an' one little roun' belly
Dat went shake when he laugh like Tutu's guava jelly.
He wastin' no time, brah, he wen put down da sack
Dat wuz big as one mountain slung up on his back.
He got plenty good tings for all da keiki
An' he wen pile dem unda da coconut tree.
He work an' he work an' he neva pau hana
Til he put someting der fo' all da Ohana.
He wen give me one wink an' one shaka, an' - pau!
Da seahorses dey know it come time to go now!
He wen pick up da board an' he run to da ocean,
He wen harness da team an' he settem in motion.
Mo fasta dan jet planes da seahorses swum
He wen whistle an' shout an' he call 'em each one:
"Go Kimo, Go Noni! Gettum Kipo an' Lani!
Go Kona, go Pua! Geevum Kiki an' Nani"
To da cres of da wave, tru da foam an' da spray,
Dey swimmin' like crazy, dey flyin' away!

Til all I wen see on da wata out fa,
Wuz one twinkle of light like one dyin' out star.

But I hea ol Nick holla
Across da dark sea,
"Merry Christmas, da kine,
Aloha Hawai`i!"

Its a doco movie about  the changing of the guard, the end of era and start of a brand new surfing direction. Just thought I'd bring you up to speed on the Moonlight Beach Surf Faire. May 5th & 6th 2012. The City of Encinitas  is completely on board for this surf faire. Which should make this event a "happening". It's going to be held in the parking lot of Moonlight Beach, overlooking the blue Pacific. There are approximately 125 booths available for food, surf and ocean ecology related vendors. But mainly for the surf industry. It will be aimed at direct sales to the consumer. I think it's a good way to kick start the summer season.  A bandstand for local musicians playing 50 & 60's surf music will also be available. On Saturday night ( weather permitting ) I'll be showing a surf movie on the sand as soon as the sun goes down. I'm leaning towards the 1963 surf movie, " RIDE THE WILD SURF". The movie is completely free. All the patrons have to do is bring blankets and chairs. I'm hoping this event will have the atmosphere of the early days of surfing..

There will also be auctions going on during the weekend of donated boards and things. All the proceeds will be split equally between the THE SURFRIDER FOUNDATION--THE CALIFORNIA SURF MUSEUM --and--THE HERITAGE SURF MUSEUM.

Should be fun.

From Peter Dixon: When I wrote HUNTING THE DRAGON some years back I thought the issue of killing dolphins to catch tuna was almost settled, at least for the Eastern Tropical Pacific.  Those tuna fishers from south of the border are at it again, using the NAFTA Trade Agreement to justify canning tuna while killing dolphins in their mile long nets.  I sensed that would happen when I wrote the novel, and sure enough those millionaire tuna canners are at it again.

The dolphin safe tuna label has saved millions of dolphins from death in the mile long killer nets.  Perhaps your environmentally aware surf book readers might find HUNTING THE DRAGON interesting as well as entertaining.  Steve Pezman wrote in The Surfer's Journal, ... an engrossing read... a life affirming message well delivered... and best of all he called it "cool".

'Saltwater People of the Broken Bays' focuses on the surf zone, and begins with the revelation that the coastal Aborigines along these beaches thrived in the ocean and were known to take their canoes out in big surf. With an Aboriginal history dating back at least 20,000 years acknowledgement of the first people is long overdue. These beaches were the also the birthplace of beach culture in Australia, with the first sea bathing, swim costumes, surfboard riding and commercial surfboard construction.

In choosing to see surf-life as impossible for the responsible, here is what gets missed. Choice is not the same as trade-off. One implies equally viable paths, the other, some kind of loss or deficit. Choosing to arrange one's life around surf does not preclude having a work-life. The fact is, most surfers manage to nurture a surf-life while maintaining a robust work-life and could actually be counted as the more highly functioning members of American society. One does not need to "drop out" in order to "drop in."

For a spot that can easily deliver not what we are wanting, like not BIG SLABBING barrels, this time the Right delivered. With a film clip:  http://www.coastalwatch.com/news/article.aspx?articleId=9634&cateId=3&title=Righteous%20Waves%20in%20West%20Oz&display=0

From Kirk Gee: ..recent surf blurbs have been very interesting due to the UK bellyboard content- my mate John at Revolver Surf Shop in Newquay, Cornwall has hooked me up with the Original Surfboard Company manufacturing some classic bellyboards - Sally Parkinshe's sent me a couple, one of Zebrano wood and one of Gaboon wood (that's the Zebrano one below with a couple of photos John took) and they are outrageously fun, sort of enhanced body surfing.  http://www.originalsurfboards.co.uk/

From Jack Jorgensen: Refinishing surfboards in Iowa? Jack sent a few pics, including one of himself (60th birthday pic):

He's in Cedar Falls, Iowa and says: The boards are what I do to keep busy. I buy old boards from Chubby Surf (Eric Sandoval), up in Camarillo, and refinish them. They're old, not good anymore, wall boards. It keeps my hands onto surfing, so to speak.

More from Jack:  It's just a way for me ( now on disability, living alone, living 2 million miles from any surf), to stay connected to the sport. it's pretty funny. I have probably 9 more to do. People drive by, surfboards in the middle of my drriveway. Half painted ones in my garage. Some vintage ones hanging on my carport - in IOWA! My house is literally a Surf Shop smack dab in the middle of Injun Country :)

From Jim Winniman: I'm very happy to report the pictorial book on the evolution of surfboards is taking shape and will be packed with hundreds of photos and much more.

We're looking for a number of photos and hoping someone might be able to help in that regard.

The Surfing Heritage Foundation

Vintage Surf Auction

May 2013

.

The theme is "California Gold" and the Surfing Heritage Foundation (SHF) is focusing on just that, boards and memorabilia with a California flair from the '20s through the '70s. We've already coalesced a solid selection of "Gold' from various sellers and are actively searching for more. We're anticipating between 50 - 60 vintage surfboards for the live auction and at least 40 items for the silent auction.

Randy Rarick, a member of the Surfing Heritage Foundation Auction Advisory Committee, and a great friend of the Surfing Heritage Foundation, has bequeathed his auction expertise upon the SHF and will also serve as the emcee of this gala.

Please put the Surfing Heritage Foundation Vintage Surf Auction May 2013 on your radar!

Sincerely,

About SURFING HERITAGE FOUNDATION

The Surfing Heritage Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving, presenting and promoting surfing's heritage for the appreciation and education of current and future generations; and to achieving our goal of surfing being more accurately understood, represented and enjoyed.

Preservation
Focusing on the complete spectrum of surfing's history and development, including but not limited to significant surfboards, photography and the full range of other forms of information and objects of cultural value.

Presentation
Establishing a world-class museum/resource facility, including an outreach program that creates exhibits and develops venues for effective traveling and/or off-site display: that this facility might serve as a symbolic center for the wave riding culture in the United States, dedicated to the understanding and appreciation of surfing as a sport, lifestyle, and culture.

Promotion
Building a community who actively support the Surfing Heritage Foundation with fundraising, promotion and advocacy.

From Phil Roberts: His board for this weekend's Sacred Craft Board Art Benefit: a 7'4" Pipeline Gun shaped by Gerry Lopez ( like the Pipeline Masters trophy boards I've been making with Gerry ). The painting is based on the 1979 photo by Lance Trout with his special permission. The board has all three signatures on the deck - shaper, artist and photographer. The bottom will have a gold leaf lightning bolt. I'll be doing a demo painting on this board detailing out Gerry's portrait in oils on the sanded hot coat this weekend. It's a rare chance for someone to acquire a Pipeline Masters board as a non-competitor and proceeds go to a worthy cause at Surf Aid International.

From Gary Lynch: Surfing will now be incorporated into Hawaii public high school athletics programs.  The Sport of Kings is now becoming the Sport of Kids. http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/15607585/surfing-to-become-hawaii-high-school-sport

Also from Gary: Surfing Stunts 1949 video: First sequence is Pete Peterson surfing solo at Corona del Mar. Next waves are Lorrin Harrison and Pete Peterson tandem surfing with Lorrin's kids at San Onofre. Note that Lorrin is riding a finless plank which probably weighs 70 lb. His little daughter, Marian is 13 months old. He turns the board with his foot. This sequence was the first surfing filmed from a helicopter - date 1949. This video was shown all over the country in movie theaters prior to the feature. One shot has a canoe with Ron Drummond going past to screen left! From Scott Bass: Sacred Craft is in Del Mar next weekend Oct 8 and Oct 9 http://sacredcraftexpo.com/

The upcoming Sacred Craft Consumer Surf Expo has something for everybody - even antique collectors. The Collectible Surfboard & Surf Memorabilia "Antique Roadshow" is modeled after PBS TV's highly successful "Antique Roadshow" series. The Sacred Craft version of "Roadshow" invites the general public to bring collectible surfboards and memorabilia to a panel of experts for appraisal. The panel assigns a value to the items, but more importantly they often uncover the provenance, or story, behind the value of the item.

"The power of the "Roadshow" lies in the 'buried treasure concept,'" said Scott Bass, Expo Director. "Many of us possess, in our garage or attic, or perhaps under the house, a collectible surfboard; a board that for whatever reason holds intrinsic value above and beyond the value of a regular or 'normal' used surfboard. If the board has a strong provenance, well, this generally increases its value. Perhaps it was on the cover of a surf magazine, or George Greenough pulled into the barrel on it during filming of "Innermost Limits of Pure Fun." Whatever the case, our appraisers want to see it."

But 'roadshow' isn't just about surfboards. Surf 'paper', as the experts refer to it, is also of import to the collectors and appraisers. Maybe you possess an old Rick Griffin surf movie poster from the Santa Monica Civic, or a Malibu Pro surf contest program, or perhaps a business card from Tom Blake or signed photo of Duke Kahanamoku Any item that you think may be worth something, the appraisers would love to see it, and to help you better understand its provenance and possible market value. The more information you can bring to the discussion, the more accurate the appraisal.

We all probably have a bit of buried treasure; we just may not know it! The Collectible Surfboard "Antique Roadshow" appraisals will visit the Del Mar Fairgrounds one day only, on Saturday October 8 from 10am-4pm as a part of the 2-day Sacred Consumer Surfboard Expo. Expert appraisers, including Bird Huffman from Bird's Surf Shed and experts from the Surfing Heritage Foundation and the California Surf Museum, will be on hand for surfboards, surf 'paper', surf posters, surf magazines, surf art, surf books and surf memorabilia. Please bring out your surf collectibles for appraisal - and a great time.

The shark was protesting to everyone trying to get there.

Can  your readers tell me anything about this photo? It could be taken at Tent City, Coronado, California, in Glorietta Bay. I know John Peck hails from Coronado and sent this to him to see if this is any info on surfing Pecks through his family contacts, but he didn't respond.

The bottom one is taken off the old Ferry Landing in San Diego Bay. That's the old Coronado Ferryboat, which places this no later than 1922.

The Peck shot is the one I'm curious about. There are folks in Coronado who remember as young people, driving their Model T along Coronado Beach, pulling people on wood planks in the shallows. josephditler@san.rr.com

"Men of California seen through a viewer...sunsurfers, muscle beach, Griffith Park...Surfers looking at a frozen wave, arranged in meaningless poses...Boy on surfboard like some delicate amphibian from Bosch, his feet sprouting delicate coral, blond hair swept back from an angel face, a translucent tube guiding his pink craft....

Recent exchange with historian Geoff Cater as to whether Lord Byron ever surfed - Lord Byron, the poet (#2 of the 3 discussed below):

Is there any evidence that the poet Lord Byron (2) ever surfed?

No, but he did have an enthusiasm for swimming.

"In 1810, Byron swam across the Hellespont (the Dardanelles), at the narrowest point a little over 1 kilometer across.

His inspiration was the Greek myth of Leander who every night swam the straits to see his lover, Hero, who would hold a torch from atop a tower, to light his way.

During a violent storm Leander drowned and, witnessing his death, Hero threw herself from the tower into the sea."

See below.

I notice that you have a page on a later Lord Byron (3) and his HMS Blonde.

Was he influenced by the poet?

He was a relative, who took the title on the poet's death in 1824.
"As a career naval officer, he was notable for being his predecessor's opposite in temperament and lifestyle."

...and he witnessed and wrote of surfing!

Lord Byron (3) : Surf-riding at Waikiki, 1852.  http://www.surfresearch.com.au/1826_Byron_Voyage_Blonde.html

Also note the earlier Lord Byron (1), a Pacific explorer. The poet's ancestor.

John Byron : Tuamotus and Gibert Islands,1765.

Six months ago I digitalised and uploaded some of the surfing content from a few early Mid-Pacific Magazines.

They include an entry for Byron, Lord: Childe Harold's Pilgrimage.
The Mid-Pacific Magazine
Published by Alexander Hume Ford, Honolulu, Territory of Hawaii,
Volume 2, Number 2, August,1911, frontpiece.
Online at:
http://www.surfresearch.com.au/1911_Byron_MidPac_v2n2.html Which includes a poem of the sea by Byron and a fine Gurrey photo.

And I have loved thee, Ocean! and my joy
Of youthful sports was on thy breast, to be
Borne, like thy bubbles, onward; from a boy
I wantoned with thy breakers, - they come to me
Were a delight; and if the freshening sea.
Made them a terror, t'was a pleasing fear;
For I was as it, were a child of thee,
And trusted to thy billows far and near,
And laid my hand upon thy mane,
As I do here.

from Childe Harold's Pilgrimage,
Canto IV, st. 184, 1812 – 1818

I do not think it's color film in the 1916 footage.  (http://waikikitimemachine.blogspot.com/2010/06/really-old-hawaii-vintage-1916.html )

The film has been 'colorized' by tinting the film after developing. It goes between sepia color and bluish color. Could have been done back then or more recent.

From Scott Starr:

That color Hawaiian footage from 1916

It's hand colored, they would stain the actual frames with dye, Color film didn't really show up until the late 1930's

And i don't think it was filmed by a Dutch Crew, more likely filmed by someone from the USA but sold to a Dutch film company to distribute.  Just stock footage sold over seas so others could see it, I've seen that same footage before without the Dutch titles in the beginnings.  and i have seen Surfing footage from 1930's from Australia used over and over in different films on Surfing, all distributed by different film companies under different titles. Whoever shot it just sold it to every film company looking to splice together their own little film on surfing in Australia.

But yes a very cool film with some great music!

From Geoff Cater: geoff@realbeds.com.au

Searching for information about 1920s Waikiki surfer (and board builder?) Toots, possibly A. E. Menville.

From Tim De La Vega: Yes that is a young Toots Minveille.

Donald Arlie "Mick' Warden (1904-1956) of Milton on the NSW south coast, attended Hawkesbury Agricultural College along with  fellow
swimmer Andrew "Boy Charlton.

Following college he moved to Wollongong and joined the Austinmer SLSC  in 1922 and was a member of the recue and rescusitation team

that won the Illawarra Branch Championship in 1924.

In December 1925 he visited Honolulu for four months where he became interested in surfboard riding, possibly meeting the Kahanamoku brothers.

Mick returned to Wollongong with two Hawaiian solid timber boards, <MW> and  Toots.

He continued to compete for the Austinmer club and in 1934 moved back to Milton where he was instrumental in the formation of the Mollymook SLSC.

- Johnson: Mollymook SLSC (2010) page 5.

<MW> , with a square nose and repairs, is currently is held in the Mollymook SLSC and Toots is photographed with Fred Mumford outside the
original Mollymook surf club in 1938 (Board portrait: Mumford-Toots attached).

- Johnson: Mollymook SLSC (2010) pages 23 and 24.

Toots was possibly Waikiki surfer, A. E. Menville (?).
Also see Blackburn: Surf's Up (2001) page 43, photograph: Jan. 1 1927 - Alawai, Honolulu - Hawaiian Championships.
Board marked: Toots III, second from the right.

- noted by Ivan Johnson, phone call July 2011.
Many thanks to Ivan.

Also stumbled upon this footage.

Surfing footage, clearly shot from an outrigger, is the last item (#6).
As much of the film is colour, I doubt that it is 1916.

BY ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PERSONALITIES OF THE SPORT WORLDWIDE, MIKE DORA'S LIFELONG PERSONAL FRIEND,

 CRAIG STECYK:

"Thank you for sending me your most excellent Dora discourse. It was a good and quite provocative read. I think you have elevated the discussion and provided a service to us all. It's quite a shame that Miki did not get to see your piece as I think he would have enjoyed responding to it.

What I like about your piece is that you understand that above all Dora was a wave rider and you also deal with his quirky metaphysical orientation and obsessive contrarianistics philosophical underpinnings."

From Geoff Cater: Some illuminating historical pieces  and pics as usual:

George Bernard Shaw - Surfer:

1. G.B.S.
The board portrait photograph (#2 of 3) was first printed  in a one page article in the South African Travel News, March 1932 titled The Three Degrees of Surfing - G.B.S.'s Initiation.
Photo #1: Shaw, back to camera, walking along Muizenberg beach towards the point (Cape Penisular?).
"Thanks to his habit of early rising, Mr George Bernard Shaw has the usually crowded Muizenberg beach to himself for his initiation into the delights of surfing."
Photo #2: Board portrait with surf and riders in the background.
"Armed with the first surfboard he has handled in his crowded seventy-five years of life, Mr Shaw poses for the photographer."
Photo #3: Shaw and board in the surf with other riders in the background.
"A few minutes practice, and he becomes as adept as the the exhilarating sport as many of its younger devotees."

See
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:George_Bernard_Shaw_at_Muizenberg_%28South_African_Travel_News_March_1932%29.jpg

2. Ten years earlier another English literary figure, Agathie Christie, rode a prone surfboard at Muizenberg in 1922, before upgrading to a stand up board when visiting Waikiki later that year.
Christie spent her teenage years on the south-east coast of England around Torquay where sea bathing was a common practice; forshadowing later experiences, she notes that in her youth "on a rough day I enjoyed the sea even more".

See
Agatha Christie : Torquay, Muizenberg, and Waikiki, 1922.

3. "Surf-riding at Muizenberg:  The Queen of the Cape Coast Watering Places" was featured as an English jigsaw in the 1930s.
Other surfing jigsaws included "Surf-Riding (South Africa)" and "Surf Bathing by Spotlight. The Sport of the Australian Summer" (attached).
Items from the collection of Henry Marfleet.

A.V.N. Jones & Co. Ltd. : Surfing Jigsaws, c1930.
http://www.surfresearch.com.au/1930_Surfing_Jigsaws.html

http://www.surfresearch.com.au/1891_The_Graphic_Surfboats_Accra.html

4. Moving up the west coast of Africa, circa 1890, The Graphic published an account and an illustration (attached) of the use of surf boats at Accra, Ghana.
The Graphic (London, England),
Saturday, August 15, 1891; Issue 1133, page 196.
Sourced from the British Library
Gale Document Number: BA3201451542

Importantly, the surfboat image (sketch by Airey, engraving by Nash, 1891) shows virtually an identical craft, with the same "forked" blade paddle design, as featured as native fishing boats in a segment of Bruce Brown's The Endless Summer (1966) filmed in Ghana.

While Brown's narration suggests that the local fisherman are normally adverse to riding waves in their fishing boats, inspired by the visiting American surfboard riders (Robert August and Mike Hynson), they do so on this occassion.
The historical evidence would indicate that this was not the case, and wave riding was the common method of returning to the beach.

The Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction is nearly here! Once every two years this spectacular event comes around: July 18 thru 25 week... Hawaii here I come!

A fantastic event - it is like visiting a magnificent museum: Some of the boards have been highlighted on the Peek of the Week:   http://hawaiiansurfauction.com/peek-of-the-week/

From Steve Collins: Randy Rarick is pulling out all of the stops for what he says will be his last auction: July 23 week in Waikiki:

Here is a limited sampling of what you're "in for" once you register for the Auction ;

Hollywood comes to Honolulu
We are so proud to announce that Accidental Icon: The Real Gidget Story will have it's Hawaii Premier on Wednesday July 20th, in conjunction with the auction.  All pre-registered bidders will get free tickets to the premier, which will be run as part of the 4th Honolulu Surf Film Festival at the Honolulu Academy of Art.  Kathy Gidget Zuckerman inspired the Gidget movies, but her own story tops them all.  Join Kathy and surf celebrities for the first ever Hawaii showings of this great documentary!

Not to be outdone, we have the first premier Hawaii public showing of  Going Vertical, the full feature film of the controversy of who actually started the "Short Board Revolution". Featuring Bob McTavish and Dick Brewer, who will both be on hand for the premier screening on Thursday July 21st.  Once again, pre-registered bidders will get free tickets to attend!

Party Time!
Jimmy Buffett's at the Beachcomber and the Honolulu Surfing Museum will for the first time ever, be hosting the Pre-Auction Party on  Friday, July 22nd.  Great food and drinks are planed along with some surprise guest entertainment..  This should be a great venue as we have twice as much room for the 'gathering of the tribe'.

Art Showings
I am happy to announce that we have doubled our popular art showing area, with ten artists committed to not only displaying their works, but giving live demonstrations both days the auction is open.  Christi Shinn, the artist responsible for this years official auction poster art work will be on hand to auction off her original art, as well as exhibiting new works.  In addition, we have commitments from: Heather Brown, Clark Takashima, Derrick Ontivera, Wade Koniakowsky, Lee Clark, and Ron Croci.  Additional artists will be added as well.

Hawaii All Collector Show 2011
Held in conjunction with the auction is the ever popular Hawaii All Collector Show 2011, at the adjacent Exhibition Hall.  Pre-Registered bidders will get free entry into the show, which features over 300 vendors with all kinds of Hawaiianna and other memorbilia and collectables.

it was so-called "Classic Bells" - fab waves and goood weather - and FYI, Joel Parkinson took out the event in a finals clash with his compadre Mick Fanning.
Took a few pics and thought you may be interested to see what "Classic Bells" looks like.
I was trying for sunlight on cliff-face, wave forms, clouds, colour richness and saturation. Composition just OK, barely, results just OK, barely, but at least I had a try.

Re: "Aqueous Moments" Surfboards.

From Tom Lochtefeld: The shaper for Aqueous Moments was a gentleman by the name of Randy Pidd. Randy was a great La Jolla shores surfer back in the late 60's early 70's.  I last saw Randy about 10 years ago at a gym in La Jolla.  Due to his weight problem, he had his hip replaced and was working as a Chef in one of the mountain states (maybe Idaho).  The art work for the Aqueous Moments logo was designed by Glen Chase (Surfer Mag cartoon fame of the psychedelic genre.  Glen lived with Jeff Devine in Jeff's aunt's house).  Please find attached a picture of me on my Aqueous Moments board back in 1971 -'72 at Big Rock.  The photo was taken by Eric Aeder.

From Donna von Hoesslin: "I am reaching out to you because I would like to build our network of board builders to take part in this program so they can see their waste byproduct resin turned into something beautiful. So far we have Dennis Ryder and Gene Cooper on board, but we need more to keep up with the demand. Anyone interested in saving their resin for us can contact me at Donna@Bettybelts.com. I provide all participants with some free jewelry they can keep, sell or give to their clients." (Wow!)

From Steve Collins: "The 1'st Annual Sugar Shack Surf Swap Meet" in Sand City (next to Monterey) was a completely bitchen event. LBCC Members' James Frangella & Dan Clark know how to throw a party and this one was knocked out of the bullring. Not only were there a ton of vintage boards (a good condition Nuuhiwa noserider went for a song) to peruse/ top shelf musical entertainment to listen to/loads of good spirited surfy folks to talk to/delicious food to eat/lip smacking beer to drink.

From Randy Rarick: A request for anyone who may know anything about "Aqueous Moments" Surfboards.

Pretty neat story: This kid from Detroit bought a mid-70's single fin "Aqueous Moments" board for $100.  He surfed it in Lake Michigan and got so stoked that he brought it to Hawaii.  He broke the nose off at Rocky Point and brought it to me for repair and refurbishing.  He and his buddies are making a documentary about the journey of the board and would like to contact whoever made it or shaped it and have a bit of history about the beginnings of the board.  Anybody out there know anything about this label or who made it?  Please contact me and I'll pass on the connection!

Mahalo and Aloha,

From Bruce Gabrielson: Founding of the WSA: A little piece of history for you from a true source: Robert T. Scott, M.D:

Bob Pace was the best historian we ever had. He was living in the Long Beach area. He has a huge detailed history of all of the associations.

I can add quite a bit to your information but would have to do some more digging to come up with dates.
In the early 60s I was made Pres. of the United States Surfing Association (USSA).
Tom Morey preceded me.
Soon each region had its Association.
ESA = Eastern Surfing Association
GSA = Gulf Surfing Association
HSA = Hawaii Surfing Association

It was decided to shelf the name United States Surfing Association and it became the Western Surfing Association = WSA.
I continued as the Pres. and was reelected for several terms.

I think the WSA became the United States Surfing Federation, Western Region.
Mary Lou Drummy was very active in the United States surfing Federation Western region. She is still very active in the Western Region of the Surfing America which is now the ruling body of surfing in the United States.

Looking at the International scene:
The Federation of Surfing International, FSI  under Eduardo Arena became defunct after the World Surfing Championships of 1972. This happened because the host countries could not afford to pay airfares of the managers and top two surfers from each invited country.
The world championships had been held first in Manley Beach, Australia, 1960?. In Lima, Peru in 1961?, San Diego, 1963. In? 1966. In Puerto Rico 1968. In 1970 ?, In San Diego in 1972.

In 1975 the International Surfing Association was founded mainly by the efforts of Basil Lomburg, Cape Town South Africa. The founding committee met at the Kuilima Hotel, North Shore of Hawaii and approved the Constitution which had been drawn up by Basil Lomburg. The founding comittee consisted of Basil Lomburg, president; Wally Iea, representing Hawaii and Robert T Scott M.D. representing the mainland of the USA in proxy for Colin Couture was ill and Reginald Pretherch, UK. A permanent post of Medical Advisor was included in the Constitution. The person who occupied this post had to be approved by the Board of Directors every two years. I was the Medical Advisor on the ISA Board of Directors until 1984.

The ISA has flourished since 1975 and continues to do well organizing International Surfing Competition called the World Surfing Games.

As I can remember more details, I shall send them on to you.
I really hope you can find Bob Pace because he has so much history in fine detail.
Cordially,
he and I and

Robert T. Scott, M.D

13,000 days in a row surfing

- Daily

Dale Webster (aka "Daily Wavester") has been surfing a minimum of three waves a day since September 3, 1975. To get at the root cause of Dale's life-defining quest would require a misreading of the concept of the "lunar cycle" and an appreciation of the rarity of fifth Sundays in February. Suffice to say that it took enormous dedication, a modicum of madness, heaps of help from friends, and a huge pile of O'Neill rubber to get him from then to now. Surely, Dale's quest will go down as one of the most incredible feats in the history of surfing.    - Drew

As I remember, it was for surf shops and promo:

From Bob Green: New paipo interviews - Everything from inflated rubber to ply skimmers, hollow and solid wood to fiberglass and foam.

Paul Gannon - Coming back to paipo. Paul was one of a group who surfed Little Avalon before traveling around Australia. He started on ply boards made by Robert Hosking and after many years on other surfcraft has recently begun riding one of Dick Ash's new bellybogger models. His interview can be read here: http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/PaulGannon/PaulGannon_2011-0316.shtml

Dennis Markson interview - Riding a Maroubra skimmer. Dennis and friends body-surfed, dived and rode what they called skimmers - small ply paipo. Living overseas Dennis made and rode boards when he got the opportunity in locations from Gibraltar to the U.S. His interview can be read at: http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/DennisMarkson/DennisMarkson_2011-0125.shtml

Barry Regan Hollow ply boards, recollections from the 1950s-2010 and Colin Harper's restored paipo. Barry started surfing on wooden boards in the 1940s before progressing to a malibu board. In recent years Barry went back to building and riding hollow ply boards. His interview also contains the story of an old paipo board that was being restored. Barry tracked down its owner, Colin Harper. His interview can be read here: http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/BarryRegan/BarryRegan_2011-0315b.shtml

Bob Rose Interview -  Surfing a door with a handle. Originally from Sydney, for a time Bob shared a fibreglass bellyboard with his brother-in-law. After riding standup for several years he became fascinated with a friend's ply bellyboard. His interview can be read at: http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/BobRose/BobRose_2010-1225.shtml

John Ruffels -  Researcher of Dr Ernest Smithers. John developed an interested in the story of Dr Ernest Smithers. Ernest Smithers was of an inventive bent, however, perhaps his most well known invention in the early 1930s was the surfoplane. Smithers surfoplane was the forerunner of the modern surf-mat and was marketed around the world. His interview can be read at: http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/JohnRuffels/JohnRuffels_2011-0305.shtml

Gordon Simpson Interview - "Waimea on a bellyboard." Gordon was a standup surfer who also rode a bellyboard. During a 1961 trip to Hawaii he was talked into riding on his bellyboard at Waimea. It wasn't until years later that Gordon learned that his ride was featured in Bruce Browne's film, Surfing Hollow Days. His interview can be read: http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/GordonSimpson/GordonSimpson_2010-1228.shtml

Tom Wegener Interview -  Relearning ancient wisdom.  Originally from Palos Verdes, Tom moved to Noosa Heads, Australia, where he established a board building business. Tom's boards have been inspired by boards he saw in the Bishop Museum, Hawaii. His interview can be read at: http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/TomWegener/TomWegener_2011-0131.shtml

info re: first photo of surfer above From Tim de la Vega:

They (above) are auctioning an Albumen Print from 1895±. During the 25 year span 1860-1885 albumen paper was in virtually exclusive use as the general-purpose printing paper of photography. By coating paper with a layer of egg white and salt creates a smooth surface, then adding a layer of silver nitrate which forms light sensitive silver salts. When placed in contact with a negative and exposed to the sun a print was produced. Most of the prints I have seen of this image are done using the albumen process although I have a silver nitrate print which is what we use in modern darkrooms, this was introduced by George Eastman in 1887.

In a photo taken probably after the auction item, but very similar in style, London born Frank Davey photographed Charles Kauha in 1898 in numerous poses, but none are of Kauha surfing. Davey Photo Co. only documented Hawai'i from 1897-1901. For more information on the Davey image I refer anyone to Desoto Brown's wonderful book, "Surfing, Historical Images from the Bishop Museum"

The oldest documentable photographs of surfers posing and of actual surfing where done on the island of Niihau in 1890 by Dr. Henry C. Bolton, who wrote 'I photographed the men of Ni'ihau before they entered the water, while surf-riding, and after they came out.' These images are being published for the first time since 1890 in our publication "Images of America, Surfing in Hawai'i: 1778-1930" by Arcadia press due in June 2011. http://www.amazon.com/Surfing-Hawaii-1778-1930-Images-America/dp/0738574880/ref=cm_sw_em_r_n_jdp_EOVwnb14GZ9VH_tt

From Sam Ballam: Susan took great photos at Honolua Bay on the North Shore of Hawaii using her Nikon camera with a telephoto lens.  We were standing on a 100 foot cliff overlooking the surfing action which was about 200-300 yards away.  As you can see, the set waves were 15+ feet.  The only surfers out were pro-level shortboarders (i.e. not me!):

From Drew Kampion: February 24, 2011 - Santa Cruz, CA, USA / Ericeira, Portugal - World Surfing Reserves today announced that two nominated surf zones - Santa Cruz in Northern California and Ericeira in Portugal - have been formally approved and will be dedicated as World Surfing Reserves (WSRs). The two iconic surf regions will join Malibu, California, which was dedicated as the first World Surfing Reserve in October 2010, and Manly Beach, Australia, which was approved in 2010 and is awaiting dedication sometime in 2011, as the first sites to receive the prestigious WSR designation. http://www.worldsurfingreserves.org/

There are events all week long (surf flicks, vintage board talks, art shows, a Friday night schmooze party with many famous surf folk at Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, an antiques-road-show type appraisal day Friday, culminating in the silent and live auctions Saturday) - a true gathering of the tribes. Randy says it will be his last one... a must go!
