From Mike Dadaos: a bit of Talk Story : my mom passed away this past September and going through boxes I found stuff from our family's first visit to Hawaii in June '65. I was 14 and totally stoked to go surfing! We lived in San Francisco and hardly ever got in the ocean because it was so cold. (It was a few years later I met Jack O'Neil at his funky SF shop before moving to SC) In the box I found a receipt for a surfboard rental and lesson and George Downing was running the concession stand. It hast his initials "GD" and $3.50 for the lesson and $6.00 for the board all day. We took the lesson from a beach boy named Manny, and George took us out in a cat. Being June, the surf was pretty big for Waikiki and we caught a wave, went sideways and flipped the boat. My dad was watching from the beach and jumped on a board and started paddling out to save his boys...a city boy never on a board before! He kept paddling with his head down and went past us and kept going until another beach boy on a board caught up to him and said, "Hey brudda, you paddl'n back to San Francisco?" My dad told that story for many years! And of course it always comes back when we visit Hawaii.

From Allan Seymour: Culture Clash Story : After flying into Arcata, California and spending the night I awoke pre-dawn. Joining legendary former big wave surfer Greg Noll, and Jeff Wetmore , the ASR surf industry show producer we started north in a large rental sedan. The headlights feebly attempted to pierce the damp soggy fog. Occasionally our yellow lights would bounce on the shiny dark road giving us little more than a hint where the road was going. We were on our way to salmon fish with Greg on the Rogue River in Oregon. At first light we crossed the Klamath River, the Golden Bear statues on the bridge glistened with dew. Just north of the river we pulled into a roadside diner for coffee and breakfast. Ours was the only car in the otherwise jammed parking lot full of pick up trucks with camper shells.
I knew something was a miss when I stepped through the front door in my purple aloha shirt with chartreuse palm trees. Through the cigarette smoke I noticed all the red neck hunters and fisherman in day glow orange suspenders over plaid shirts stop talking and turn to look at me.
This old battleaxe waitress who looked like in a former occupation she could have been a tail-gunner on a beer truck showed us to our booth. As she handed me my menu she barked, “Nice Shirt!” I smiled. She then said in her booming voice, playing to a room full of locals, “You should have bought two. one to shit on, and one to cover it up with!” The whole place roared. I had tears I was laughing so hard.

From Lyn Olsson: COWABUNGA! SDSU has a surf collection! It's in the SDSU Library in Special Collections where it can be used in-house. Much of the collection was donated by dedicated collectors, and some of it was purchased with State funds. You all know how poorly off State funds are! If you would like to see this collection grow and take a tax deduction at the same time, call me, Lyn Olsson at (619) 594-0668 Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, or leave a message any time.
![]()
The collection documents the rise of the surfing industry and the enormous impact that surf culture has had on Southern California. Check it out at http://scua.sdsu.edu/collections/surfing.shtml Also, the Library is trying to raise funds for a surfing collection endowment at a minimum of $300,000. Endowments spend only the interest, not the principal. Endowments accept donations of any amount , so if this is the way you'd rather give, give me a call (number above). Gracias and Aloha.

A bit of a conflict in the next two entries: From two sources: A petition to stop surf a contest happening at Swami's. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-surfing-contests-at-swamis
Then after looking into it: I found the contest was the Women's World Longboard Championships and Linda Benson sent along some comments by Women's Champion Cori Schumacher on the use of Swami's as a contest venue.... full text follows at the end of the blurb.......
And Julie Cox wrote the following when asked her opinion about the contest at Swami's :
Hi Joe, I do have a personal opinion and that is to support Linda Benson and to support the progression of women's longboarding. I do understand both sides of the argument, but I do really think it could be a great thing to have the contest there- it is a better wave than Cardiff so the competitors would get a nice wave to surf the World Contest for, there are many wonderful local businesses that would benefit from the increase of visitors for that period of time, plus it brings our area to the forefront as a wonderful community, beautiful, positive, healthy, friendly, and supportive of the growth of surfing and women in surfing as well. The event will no doubt have a lovely vibe as will the street festival. I respect the fact that swami's has been protected for many years, but I also think this event is very unique to the area and will not come stay at the location for many years. We should embrace this event and see it as a wonderful opportunity to come together, to support surfing, support businesses, and to come together as a community. I personally would be a competitor in the event and would rather surf in north county than to travel to France again for the other World Contest. I like what Linda is doing and don't think it would open the flood gates... there should be limits, like any surf spot, to how many permits are accepted per year. That is my humble opinion as a resident of north county, a pro longboarder for 10 years, friend of Linda, lover of Swami's, past local of Malibu, etc etc. Thanks, Julie

Aloha, From Lindsay Gilbert Ahart: Whose art and photo work shows the compliments of coastal living and the carefree lifestyle of surfing. "keeps me sane": http://www.PinkLamb.com

From Jeremy Oxenden: Letter from Mr R.A. Bates. on EARLY DAYS OF SURFING. in Jersey, UK. I am sure many old members of the Jersey Swimming Club will be suprised to learn from the JEP article of September 27, 1985, that Deputy Le Fondre was one of the first to introduce sea-surfing to Jersey in 1950. I can recall sea-surfing being started in the early 1920s at the Five Mile Road beach by three JSC members, Messrs Oxenden (who also started Portelet Holiday Camp) Martin & Gordon.
We did not, of course, have sophisticated Fiberglas boards. Ours were self-made of two pieces of 5 feet long, 1 inch thick second-hand T and G flooring boards joined with cleats.
A couple of years later Archie Mayne with an 8 feet board went further out to sea to the bigger breakers and occasionally succeeded in standing on his board.
Incidentally these four gentleman, among others, could quite often be seen diving in the summer off a specially erected 45 feet diving board at the Havre des Pas pool. So good, in fact, that I got arrested for surfing Sandy Hook NJ after they closed the national park." That's being sorted out with the Feds right now.

Sandy Hall's thoughts on veracity/context of Duke "quote": "Out of the water, I am nothing."
As far as I can tell, this quote comes originally from Joe Brennan's Duke of Hawaii published in 1968.
It was written in the context of Duke being escorted to The Domain Baths, for the (Australian) National swimming meet in January 1915. I think it is more an "imagined" summary by Joe, trying to get into Duke's head, of Duke's life in 1915, rather than any actual words used by Duke in his interviews w/Joe at the end of Duke's life, circa 1967.
The (imaginary) quote hits a bullseye. It is a part of some idea that was much larger, as you say (Gary Lynch).
It encapsulated Duke's life from 1911-1915 indeed, when a lot of haoles had no "use for him" except as a champion swimmer, and an interest in his surfing techniques.
Unfortunately, Hollywood's interest was also in his water prowess - because of racism/amateur rules. He did not have a decent career until the 1930s, as Sheriff.
To summarize, because of class and race, (and who knows what else?) to powerful haoles, Duke was a nothing, unless they needed him to perform, advertise/promote Hawaii etc.
Sandy is close to finishing her Biography of Duke. Author of previous books on Duke: Memories of Duke and Duke: A Great Hawaiian.

Celebrating an Island Passion
To celebrate the 50 th anniversary this year of the Jersey Surfboard Club, Jersey Post is issuing a commemorative stamp set in a sheet featuring iconic images of surfing in St Ouen's Bay.
Surfing first captured Islanders imaginations in the 1920s when Nigel Oxenden introduced ‘surf-planing' to Island beaches - a skill he had acquired on his travels to South Africa, Australia and Hawaii. It was taken up by a dedicated band of enthusiasts and established as a leisure pursuit and sporting activity. By the 1960s and 70s Jersey was Europe's surfing mecca, hosting European championships and in 1968 five of the six-strong British surf team who competed in the World Championships were Jerseymen.
Jersey Post decided to feature a selection of different surfboards for the issue, ‘Jersey – Surfing,' within the Miniature Sheet surrounded by images of surfers supplied to stamp artist Andrew Robinson by the Jersey Surfboard Club President and Junior Director, David Ferguson, and the Treasurer, Gary Hill. Local surfing enthusiast, Dave Grimshaw, provided Philatelic Researcher, Susanne Lowman, with the history of surfing in the Island for the narrative that accompanies this commemorative issue.
Mrs Lowman said t he narrative follows the story of surfing in Jersey from the 1920s through the development of belly-boarding, made popular after the Liberation, to surfboard riding introduced in 1958 by South African lifeguards who first demonstrated riding the surf in St Ouen's Bay while standing on boards.
‘Surfing has become a local passion since the early days when Nigel Oxenden introduced it to Jersey. His legacy lives on in the activities of those dedicated enthusiasts, who surf all year round, but especially through his grandsons, Jeremy and Nigel, who surf and still have the boards he made by hand. We were delighted to commemorate this landmark in local surfing with a special issue,' she said.
The Presentation Pack features the stamp issue, First Day Cover and presentation pack which all feature iconic photograph of surfers in St Ouen's Bay, taken by the late J D Houiellebecq ARPS and which is reproduced by kind permission of Angela Houiellebecq.
The Miniature Sheet, First Day Cover Envelope and Presentation Pack will be issued on Tuesday 2 June 2009.
[Ends]

SAVE THE DATE - SEPT 12/13

Part of a wonderful review by Drew Kampion to be in a future Surfer's Path: "Here's a rare gem that has opened new historical awareness to an obscure yet fundamental area of California surfing history, introducing us to the life and times of a young man named Emil Sigler (now close to 100 years old), one of the seminal surfers of the early days of the sport in San Diego.... Waterman's Eye is filled with delights and surprises, revealing the richness of a far-off time when iron men roamed the sands, and fishing, lifeguarding, and riding waves were truly exotic pursuits, practiced and celebrated on the fringes of civilization."

Update on Granny (LeRoy Grannis) from Malcolm ( malcolm@legendarysurfers.com ) : Yes, LeRoy's fallen on harder times, but he's able to supplement his Social Security and MediCal with his retirement from the telephone company. He's had to go from an assisted-living situation to being looked after by his son John. The real question mark lies with his "estate," as a whole. It has been appraised at around $1 mil. So, to all those who have come forward to help right now, there really is no mechanism in place to fundraise for Granny. This situation may change and if and when it does, I will be sure to let you know ASAP. Likewise, any news about Granny's photo collection, I'll be sure to pass along. Meanwhile, Granny is still with us and still "taking visitors." Go by and visit him. He is still the same great person we all love and what he needs most is more visitors." Synopsis
Tommy Walker and his Hawaiian Surfboard, 1909.
In 1908, Manly surfer, Tommy Walker, purchased his first surfboard while visiting Hawaii and upon his return in 1909, began riding the board at Manly Beach. Other local surfers joined Walker and the popularity of surfboard riding saw a growing concern for the potential danger to swimmers. While some wanted an outright ban, others sought to regulate surfboard riding and in 1912 an amendment to the NSW Local Government Act provided for council beach inspectors to regulate surfboard use, depending on prevailing conditions. By the summer of 1911-1912, Walker had honed his skill to the extent that at the Freshwater Carnival in January, the Daily Telegraph reported: "A clever exhibition of surf board shooting was given by Mr. Walker, of the Manly Seagulls
Surf Club. With his Hawaiian surf board he drew much applause for his clever feats,
coming in on the breaker standing balanced on his feet or his head."
Tommy Tanna and the Introduction of Body Surfing, 1890s.
Walker was one of the first generation of body surfers following the introduction of the ancient Polynesian art by South Sea Islander, Tommy Tanna, at South Steyne in the 1890s. Tanna inspired several local surf-bathers including Eric Moore, Arthur Lowe and the first acknowledged expert, Freddie Williams. These early enthusiasts promoted their newly acquired skills with public demonstrations at local surf carnivals and representative visits along the East Coast. In addition, by 1907 bodysurfing was actively promoted in the press as a healthy and inexpensive recreation, with articles including basic “surf-shooting” instruction and action photographs.
Duke Kahanamoku, 1914-1915.

While the number of surfboard riders steadily increased and spread progressively along the East Coast, in December 1914 surfboard riding became front page news with the arrival of Olympic champion, Duke Paoa Kahanamoku. Ostensibly in Australia for a series of swimming competitions and exhibitions, Duke's fame as a surfboard rider initiated a series of surfboard riding exhibitions, the first at Freshwater Beach on 24th December. Further demonstrations followed in the New Year at Freshwater, Manly, Dee Why, and Cronulla. Duke's impressive performances dramatically lifted surfboard riding's profile and, despite the outbreak of WWI, it continued to flourish. In Sydney, the world's first surfing newspaper, The Surf, issued twenty weekly issues in the summer of 1917-1918.
The Pacific Games, Honoulu, 1939.
By the 1930s, surfboard riding was firmly entrenched and in 1939 Australian surfboard riders confidently accepted a challenge to compete against Hawaii's best. Before the competition journalist Harry Hay, the swimming coach to Olympic Champion and Manly surfer, “Boy” Charlton, claimed “Australian's Are ‘Tops' in Surf Board Riding,” predating similar contentious articles such as John Witzig's “We're Tops Now” in 1966 and “Busting Down the Door” by Wayne “Rabbit” Batholomew in 1977. A team of twenty-two competitors and officials arrived in Hawaii in July to compete in an extensive series of events including competition with surfboards, surf boats, outrigger canoes and the surf ski, as well as a full swimming program. The representative surfboard riders were Dick Chapple (North Bondi), Keightly “Blue” Russell (Palm Beach), and Lou Morath (Manly). The Australians also received the full benefits of Hawaiian hospitality, overseen by the then Sheriff of Honolulu, Duke Kahanamoku, and upon their return to Sydney in August, the Telegraph reported, perhaps not surprisingly, “Surf Tourists Find Real Work Unpleasant.” The carnival's success initiated plans for another in Sydney in 1940, which failed to eventuate with the outbreak of WWII.
Other Surfcraft.

While the essential focus is on surfboard riding, the development by Australian surfers of alternative wave riding craft will also be addressed. For example the surf boat, pioneered by Manly's Sly family in 1903, the surf canoe, the surf ski by Harry McLaren in 1928 at Port Macquarie, and Dr Ernest Smithers' surfoplane at Bronte in 1932.

From Joel Smith: Non-Sequitur cartoon by Wiley Miller:

From David Pu'u: At LAX today (April 2), Mary Osborne had a fun time (not) with Continental agent "Lisa M" and others. He says: "I really would like people to be aware of this prior to going on a trip."
Here's Mary's tale:
I just managed to have the worst check in at the airport in history. I had two longboards two shortboards ( one I was bringing for a friend) and they wanted to charge me $700. The first lady then sent me to this guy who was going to let me slide for $200 - the superintendent who was another woman came over and told him, not going to happen. I had to separate the two boards into another bag.
I explained that's impossible they will get ruined with no cover. She said she has plastic bags (like grocery bags) to cover them. Umm, no that won't work. She then told me to have my sponsors pay, hahha. So two ladies denying me and one man saying ok. So finally I agree nicely " I'll pay 200 and separate (them)" to the man. When I go to drop off at security I combined them back together.

I go to my gate security, and I hear them call my name on loudspeaker. I head back to superintendent where she says to separate (them) again. Aren't these boards going on same flight I ask??? It apparently doesn't matter. I asked her what does she do with golf bags? No answer. Then I manage to get super mad, I'm sweating all over from being sick for the last two days and moving boards around and scream at her with my horrible scratchy voice that this is crazy. Same flight- same bags. I paid for two, now making one.

The calling has called again, and I'm putting some feelers out, seeking content donations (= no $ buyouts [yes, I am broke]) for the first issue of Nectar Zine. Nectar #1 will be black-and-white, photocopied (maybe on recycled paper), 8.5"x11" (11"x17" spreads), staple-bound, and ideally around 100+ pages. I'll be making the whole thing--editing, design, production, distribution--but I need outside voices to enrich and broaden the scope of underground "surf journalism." Perhaps you have something the "real" mags won't/can't publish? An interview, photos, travel story, shaping article, opinion, poem, artwork, etc.?
Above all, this is a labor of love. Maybe none of you want to submit material for free, and, trust me, as a career freelancer who lately has found himself without much work in the New Economy, I know the deal. But for me, making a zine is innate, so it shall be done. I aim to make it a regular thing. So let me know where you stand. Nectar is going to be a fun project--hopefully you can be a part of it. Aloha, New Arrivals on the site recently include:

http://www.surfbooks.com/magazines.htm
Reminder: Surfboard Collector's Club meet: March 21, 22 at Huntington Beachcruiser event. Full details: rjmann@sbceo.org From Tom Laura: March 28 showing of Rell Sunn movie.

From Richard Dowdy: The new California Surf Museum home is beautiful! I was there Sunday giving them a photo to use when they screen "Behind the Lines," about surfers in Vietnam during the war. It's narrated by John Milius. I'm attaching a photo I shot of him in '78 at his Hollywood Hills home. I gave the museum a large print to display.

Noticed on site: On Saturday, April 11, CSM is excited to host ukulele phenom Jake Shimabukuro in concert at Grace Chapel Theater, 102 N. Freeman, Oceanside, at his only spring appearance in northern San Diego County, a fundraiser for CSM.
From Oswaldo Pepe: a view of his surf shack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-0K2Y6AKNbs
From Denny Michael: Surfing Heritage Foundation Roast Honored Founders Dick Metz and Spencer Croul. Sunday evening March 8th, that's bound to go down in the annuals of surf lore as one of the most irreverent evenings of all time. Perhaps the infamous Master of Ceremonies, Robert “Wingnut” Weaver, said it best, “"This is the first ever roast in the sport of surfing and it's about time we cooked some of our sport's most cherished characters!"

From Left: Hobie Alter, Spencer Croul, Bruce Brown, Greg Noll, Dick Metz.
From Joe Ditler via Gary Lynch: It's my day-to-day car, a 1924 Ford Model T C-Cab. I don't take it off island unless I have to, but for Coronado, it makes for an exquisite surf vehicle. Trouble is that my longboard is longer than the truck bed. I end up driving to the beach with more board out than in, like an old Murph the Surf cartoon.

From Gary Lynch: Magazine Death Pool: January 08, 2009 includes Water and Longboard magazines: http://www.magazinedeathpool.com/magazine_death_pool/sports/ and this article predicts a major surf magazine will go under later this year: http://sickshots.com:80/?p=528

HIGHLY ANTICIPATED VINTAGE SURF AUCTION RETURNS TO HONOLULU
Biennial Event Lures Collectors from Around the World
HONOLULU (February 17, 2009) - Mark your calendars! With 5 months to go, the fifth biennial Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilver Premium, is set to raise the bar on international surf auctions once again when it returns to the Blaisdell Center, Honolulu, on July 17 & 18. Over the past four auctions more than $1,500,000 of the finest vintage surfboards and surf memorbilia have changed hands and over $75,000 has been donated to various charitable causes and foundations.
This year's auction is already shaping up to be the biggest and best yet. As has become the tradition, veteran surfboard designers, shapers and manufactures will be in attendance, including Matt Kivlin, Joe Quigg, Greg Noll, Dick Brewer, Ben Aipa, Bing Copeland, and Ole Olson, amongst a host of others.
Surf stars of the '60s the likes of Jock Sutherland, Fred Hemmings, Ricky Grigg, Joey Cabell, Buffalo Keaulana and many others will also be on hand. They will be joined by short board pioneers of the '70s & '80s: Pipeline Masters Gerry Lopez, Rory Russell and Jeff Crawford; as well as world champions Mark Richards, Peter Townend, Shaun Tomson, and Tom Carroll, all of whom will have personalized surfboards from the various eras. They will be joined by revered Hawaii surfers Larry Bertlemann, Barry Kanaiaupuni and Bobby Owens.
Never-before-seen surfboards have been unearthed, including an ancient 1850 breadfruit board, turn-of-the-century redwood planks, hollow paddle boards, design-changing early wood/fiberglass prototypes, big wave "guns" of the '60s, and pro boards of the '70s and '80s.
Along with the treasure trove of surfboards will be an eclectic selection of Hawaiian-theme artwork, surf contest items, unique island-influenced surf memorabilia, some of the first images of surfing ever depicted in print from Missonary times, off-beat surf advertising from early media, and other rare finds.
The ever-popular "Antiques Road Show"-style appraisals will be back again for those curious to find out the value of personal surf collectibles.
Event Producer Randy Rarick is looking forward to picking up again with this highly anticipated mid-summer event that originated in 2001 and has been held every other year, with the last auction in 2007.
"This will be our fifth auction in Honolulu and I'm really proud to say that it has grown to be recognized around the world as the best vintage surf auction there is," said Rarick. "With the unique mixture of items on offer, it's guaranteed to appeal to every surf enthusiast."
Search for Unique Items Continues:
"We are still on the hunt for items to round out the offerings and hope that people will come forward with unique items for possible consignment," added Rarick.
The Hawaiian Islands Vintage Surf Auction, presented by Quiksilver Premium, is run in conjunction with the All Collectors Show 2009, at the Blaisdell Center and, as such, will offer a wide variety of items that are sure to be of interest to more than just the avid surf collector.
The auction has acted as a fundraiser for various enities and 2009 will be no exception; a portion of the proceeds will benifit a variety of foundations this year that include the following: The Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation, The Surfing Heritage Foundation, and The Surfrider Foundation (Hawaii Chapter).
So, if you have an old surf collectable, dig it out of the closet or garage and come be part of the fun! To consign an item or for further event information, visit the website: www.hawaiiansurfauction.com or contact Randy Rarick.

re: the Duke painting from David Pu'u: You know, I think Duke DID paint, as he hung with my Grandfather, John Kalani Pu'u, who was a stage set painter and artist among other things.?

So it would not surprise me in the least. It was common for Hawaiians to be artists, musicians and dancers as those activities were intrinsic to the culture. No idea if he did that painting but he could have you know?

Aloha, From Phil: Larry Laws of Texas passed away recently: http://www.caller.com:80/news/2009/jan/08/laws_obit/
From Larry Souza: I need your help....!!!!! They are going to close down the Surf Museum ( http://www.santacruzsurfingmuseum.org/ ) at Light House Point (Steamer Lane) in Santa Cruz.
The surf museum at the most awsome/historic point break in the U.S. Jessie is the man who works there, he is amazing, and he and this institution should not be closed down, they deserve better and more respect from the community. My dad surfed from San Francisco to Mexico in the 40s and 50s, he loved this place, and the museum is the life of our surf community from Mendocino -> San Francisco -> Pacifica -> Santa Cruz -> to Santa Barbara.
When I walk into the museum, it reminds me of my dad, and and his friends, all he/they did for the surf culture and community from San Francisco to Mexico, the innovations and courage it took to be one of the first surfers to surf Ocean Beach, Pacifica, Montara, Half Moon Bay, Steamers, Pleasure, Privates, Capitola to Santa Barbara to Mexico. And the friends he lost on the way, they deserve to be remembered, and the Surf Musem does this.
I do not know what to do, I have given money, I have told my friends, can you tell your friends to let the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors of Santa Cruz, and everyone you know, not to close the surf museum down.
Please let the mayor, the board of supervisors, and the community know how you/we feel, we can not stand by and watch our culture be taken away, this place is too special to let it go by the wayside: RCoonerty@ci.santa-cruz.ca.us , ellen.pirie@co.santa-cruz.ca.us , john.leopold@co.santa-cruz.ca.us , Neal.Coonerty@co.santa-cruz.ca.us , Tony.Campos@co.santa-cruz.ca.us , mark.stone@co.santa-cruz.ca.us , lise@santacruzmuseums.org ,
