SURF BLURB

Thursday, May 01, 2008

Aloha, From Roger Mann: Longboard Collector's Club meets at Beach Cottages ( 4255 Ocean Blvd) in Pacific Beach/San Diego just south of Crystal Pier - Sat.  May 3rd in the morning.  It is titled “The Belly Fest” and will focus on belly boards, though a variety of vintage longboards will be for sale/trade.

From Courtney Trostle: THIS APPEARS TO BE A KNEEBOARD & IT MAY HAVE BEEN USED AS ONE. THE REAL STORY BEHIND IT'S CREATION WAS TOLD TO ME BY DAVID NUUHIWA & CONFIRMED BY BILL FURY. BOTH OF THESE GUYS WERE AT THE CORE OF THE PLASTIC FANTASTIC SCENE IN HUNTINGTON BEACH. THE BOARD'S LENGTH IS 5' - 6", WITH A SINGLE BOX FIN. IT WAS MADE IN LATE 1968 OR EARLY 1970. WHAT MAKES IT UNIQUE IS THAT IT WAS DESIGNED TO BE USED DURING "BLACKBALL" CONDITIONS IN THE SUMMERTIME. HUNTINGTON PIER HAS A SURFBOARD CURFEW THAT WAS DESIGNED TO PROTECT TOURISTS FROM LOOSE BOARDS IN THE SHOREBREAK (PRELEASH). THESE BOARDS WERE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO BE AT THE MINIMUM BOARD LENGTH FOR THIS TIME OF YEAR / BLACKBALL CONDITIONS. THE LIFEGUARDS WERE POWERLESS TO STOP THE HANDFUL OF GUYS SURFING THE PIER. DAVID TOLD ME HE & JOHN BOOZER HAD IT ALL TO THEMSELVES ON MANY OCCASION.

'An art history of British surfing' opens at the Red House Museum in Christchurch, Dorset on May 3rd and runs through until June 14th 2008.
It's a beautiful venue in a pretty town sandwiched between the New Forest and some amazing surfing beaches.

From Gary Lynch: A  'Tom Blake Approved' aquaplane made by the L.A. Ladder Company. (the only one Gary has seen) and is for sale: Randall Romack @ fish_jeep@yahoo.com   .

Cruz's SHOW is coming up in June:

From Snake: New England Surf Legend and East coast Surfing Hall of Fame Member Peter Pan (Famous for his ready wit and dominance in ice-cold knee-high Rhode Island surf) has accepted the position as Media Director for the National Surf Schools and Instructors Association (NSSIA). He will be replacing another legend, Jericho Popplar, who will now move into a Director at Large position.

From Lyn Olsson of SDSU:  re: Surf Literature Collection: San Diego State University Library's Special Collections and Archives (rare books and unpublished items) houses a fabulous collection of surf literature. This is due in part to occasional purchases, and to a handful of collectors making regular gifts of books and magazines from their collections.  Through this collection, our patrons, which are students and community members, can gain a good picture of the history of surfing including that of San Diego.

SDSU is working closely with the California Surf Museum to try and locate primary/unpublished/one-of-a-kind documents which give new insights into surfing as a sport, culture, personal quest, social statement--you name it--all of the diverse aspects of the sport which makes it such a beautiful art. Correspondence, notes, scrapbooks, sketches, board plans, minutes of meetings, photographs, stickers, logos, interviews with San Diego County surfers, additional books, anything that is two dimensional is desirable.  Of course the Surf Museum collects three dimensional items, and either SDSU or the Museum can be contacted for these.

We have a top notch staff in our Special Collections at SDSU which ensures the preservation, security, and access of its collections.  Please take a look at http://infodome.sdsu.edu/about/depts/spcollections/ for a good idea of what we do and what we have.

Thank you for reading through this.  SDSU Library and CA Surf Museum hope that taking part in the gathering of this elusive material is of interest to many of you.  Looking forward to hearing from you!

BRITISH PRO SURFER… IS HISTORY!

Press release March 26, 2008

One of Europe's top pro surfers has been appointed Patron to the British Surfing Museum.
Quiksilver and Gravis rider Gabe Davies, who holds multiple British and national titles, has agreed to join the not for profit organisation and will help out with publicity, advice and special events.
“We asked Gabe because we believe he is the perfect role model for British surfing,” said museum founder and director Pete Robinson, “his recent achievements alone – riding some of the biggest waves in the world off the coast of Ireland – mean his name is already legendary.”
“He has his own great history of British surfing, with his many competition wins and performances in oceans the world over – but more than that he is a forward thinking man with great credentials.  Gabe is someone all surfers of all abilities can look up to with admiration.”
Gabe has been surfing since the age of 11, taking to the waves at his home beach of Tynemouth in North East England.  He now divides his time between the UK and South West France where he lives with his wife – the best selling fictional author Lauren Davies.
The British Surfing Museum, sponsored by Oxbow UK, is in detailed talks with a trust in Cornwall and plans to establish a permanent home by 2010.  Among its many artefacts, the museum owns more than 100 original British surfboards that create a complete timeline of the last century of surfing in the UK.
Its research has recently uncovered remarkable footage of stand-up surfing in Cornwall in 1929, plus references to surfing taking place in England in the mid 19th Century and evidence that Captain James Cook's crew tried surfboards when they first made contact with Hawaii in 1778.
Gabe Davies said: “One of the most unique and fascinating aspects of surfing is its history and its heritage.  Every surfer feels he or she is a direct descendant of the sport of Hawaiian kings.  We all share that special connection with the ocean.  The British Surfing Museum is the best way for myself and others to view our heritage first hand, as well as to help educate, and of course protect the roots of British surfing.  This is something I feel proud to support and I'd encourage participation in the museum at every level”
The surf museum project was started in 2003 by 47 year old Robinson, who runs ITV's community broadband internet service ITV Local, and currently operates a series of touring exhibitions visiting surfing communities around the UK.
Next dates are May1st  – June 14th 2008 at Red House Museum in Christchurch, and June 28th – September 7th 2008 at the National Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby.
As well as appointing Gabe Davies as Patron, the museum's steering committee has now been expanded to include World Champion kite-surfer Kirsty Jones, Surf Nation author Alex Wade, surf writer and journalist Alf Alderson, and Neil Watson from East Anglia who cut his teeth in surf publishing in the 1970s with seminal titles that included Ripple and Surf.

From Pete Robinson to Joel Smith: Thanks for confirming the research on George Freeth's Anglo-Hawaiian heritage. I accepted your research when it was first published and it has formed part of the British Surfing Museum's time-line since we launched.
When you see so many people still sticking with the 'old' story it starts to make you question your beliefs.
That (George) Freeth was not of Irish lineage is a bit of a blow to the storyline of the new film Waveriders - see http://www.inisfilms.com/behindthescenes/?cat=3
I have posted on The Times 'Surf Nation' Blog in an attempt to correct this historical fact. Interesting that the BBC were involved in the production.

From the Holden Family:
On February 3, 2008 , my father suffered a fatal heart attack at his home.
Our family is having a very hard time with his passing, even though we know that is the last thing he would have wanted.  It has been a pleasure to have been raised by and to have known such a wonderful man.  He touched everybody's lives in different ways and because of that I know he will always be remembered.  He would want us to remember him with laughter and not tears as he always had a smile on his face.
A memorial service is tentatively planned for the end of February beginning of March and a paddle out in the spring.

PRESS RELEASE

January 10, 2008 – FOR IMMEDIATE USE

AN ART HISTORY OF BRITISH SURFING

Art and surfing have been inextricably linked for hundreds of years, and now a new exhibition looks at how both these elements combined to glide into British consciousness over the past few centuries.

From early sketches of surfers during the voyages of Captain James Cook in the 18 th century and iconic hand sculpted wooden surfboards, to the flower power of the 1960s and garish fluorescent colours of the 1980s – paintings, posters, photography and film – ‘an art history of British surfing' is a visual feast.

The act of riding a wave itself, is perhaps the purest form a surfing art; the surfer propelled by a pulse of energy from mother nature, painting lines on the ever changing canvas of the wave.

This exciting new show has been put together by Brighton-based not for profit organisation, The Surfing Museum and is sponsored by the clothing company Oxbow and the Kind Design graphics team in North Devon.

“Surfing is part of everyday culture in the UK today, it's imagery is the marketing person's dream come true,“ said director of The Surfing Museum, Peter Robinson.

“It is something that has always captured the public's imagination, probably because of its innovation, free flowing form and laid back lifestyle.”

Among the artefacts on display will be original British surfboards dating back almost a century featuring art and sculptural form. It will be complemented by an eclectic mix of memorabilia showing amazing artwork from the creative minds of surfers and those drawn to this ancient pastime.

Also on show will be stunning replicas of ancient Hawaiian surfboards hand carved by the Tom Pohaku Stone – a lecturer in Hawaiian culture and surfer of legendary status.

Havant Museum in Hampshire - January 19th to March 1 st 2008

Red House Museum in Christchurch - May 3rd to June 14 th 2008

The National Fishing Heritage Centre in Grimsby - June 28th to September 7th 2008

Full Info on Professional Surfers Unite with a Pro Board Benefit
for  Jeannie Chesser and the Defend Oahu Coalition

Jeannie Chesser, long time Hawaii surfer and onetime
surfing champion, is battling a rare form of cancer.
A unique surf benefit is being organized for her by
friend Mark Cunningham and other    surfers.  The
benefit will be held Saturday, January 19, 2008 from
noon until 6 PM at the Waimea Valley Audubon Center
(59-864 Kamehameha Highway, Haleiwa, HI).   The
benefit will feature a variety of surfboards surfed by
professional surfers, boards donated by shops and
shapers, surf art, jewelry, books, photos and other
surf related items.  Organizer Mark Cunningham notes
the goal is to "(A)ssemble the greatest collection of
contemporary pro surfboards, new and used, ever to be
gathered in one place."  Funds raised from this
benefit will go towards Jeannie's medical bills and
towards the Defend Oahu Coalition.  Jeannie is a
longtime supporter of the Coalition.

Professional surfers who have donated boards for this
benefit include Dustin Barca, J.T. Barron, Taj Burrow,
Joel Centio, Shane Dorian, Danny Fuller, Brad Gerlach,
Chava Greenlee, Andy Irons, Rico Jimenez, Noah
Johnson, Taylor Knox, Cory Lopez, Phil MacDonald, Rob
Machado, the Malloy Brothers, Jamie O'Brien, Mark
Occhilupo, Joel Parkinson, Dave Rastovich, Jason
Shibata, Kelly Slater, Ian Walsh, Dave Wassel, and Tom
Whitaker.

Jeannie was born in Miami, FL and moved to Hawaii in
the 1970s.  Jeannie won her first surf contest in 1965
and was US Surfing Champ in 1992.  She married David
Chesser and had a son, Todd, who followed his mother
into the waves of Hawaii.  Todd was the NSSA Surf
Champion in 1985 and enjoyed surfing large waves,
including participating in the Eddie Aikau Big Wave
Invitational.  Sadly, Todd was killed while surfing
large waves in 1997.

Jeannie combined her love of the water with her work,
and has become an accomplished painter.  She is known
for her work on surfboards, and on canvas.  Her art
will be included in the upcoming auction.  Jeannie is
a frequent surfer in Hawaii waves and notes that
Tavarua, a wave in Fiji, has    provided solace to her
throughout her life.  Jeannie describes her current
work as ""(T)otally therapeutic to work with beads,
jewelry, and silver.  That people like my stuff enough
to buy it is   certainly a bonus. I know my art is not
going to change the world.it's not earth-shattering.
But I hope it cheers people up or just gives them
something pleasant to look at.  Todd's mana (spirit)
lives on in me and my art."

Event organizer Mark Cunningham is a world renown body
surfer who has been a lifeguard in Hawaii for many
years.  While enjoying retirement from life-guarding,
Mark continues to surf and organize for causes
including Jeannie and the Defend Oahu Coalition.  Mark
is the 2007 Pipeline Bodysurfing Champion, a past
winner of the Mexico International Bodysurfing
Competition and has been featured in several surf
films.

The Defend Oahu Coalition is a diverse group of
community residents, environmentalists, activists and
religious leaders all working together towards one
goal: protecting communities along the North Shore
from the dangerous effects of large scale development.
Members of the coalition believe that the beautiful
North Shore is for all Oahu residents as well as
visitors, and are committed to ensuring that it will
continue to be a resource for generations to come.
Members of the Defend Oahu Coalition are best known
for their kelly green Keep the country COUNTRY shirts
and will be encouraging members to wear their kelly
green at this benefit.

From Cary Weiss: Malibu suffers another  loss of a wonderful man - Every time he was in the lineup gave me hope for the future and joy to have been able to share with him the limited time we have in the water - Bill Moore was one of the early lifeguards with Pete Peterson in
the 30's -  in Santa Monica, Bay Club, Topanga etc -  He surfed Malibu daily until his late 80's and surfed it well- always wore a numbered water polo cap --- When he was 87 or 88 he went in for back surgery and ended up spending the next 2 years in a wheel chair with a care giver who brought him done to the Bu every few months-   The attached pics were taken in 2004 and the one sitting on the beach was taken oct. 06  http://www.surfbooks.com/billmoore.jpg

From  Danny (Admiral) Stockdale: Just wanted to spread the stoke that magazine brought. I ended up giving it to one of my best friends. Don has owed a local surfshop in Belmar, Central NJ shore for 25 years. I mentioned Cecil Lear before - Cecil was not mentioned in the article which was quite surprising given his position in NJ surf history, actually there wasn't a whole lot about NJ. Cecil said he didn't meet Greg Noll until the early 90's. But Cecil was EXTEMELY stoked when he stopped in the shop for the Christmas eve party and Don showed him the mag. See Cecil actually worked for Petersens but not until 1966. He sat and read through the whole issue but I think enjoyed the credits page the most remembering coworkers names. Don's going to frame it and put on the wall of the shop (if he can find room). There was also a crew of other old guys in and remembering when….Great stoke that night and wanted to spread it out there. Thanks.

Mini Biography
Beautiful, vibrant-looking 60s actress Wende Wagner (her real name) was born in Connecticut in 1941. Of French, German and Native American heritage, her exotic looks would later serve her well on TV and in motion pictures. She inherited her athletic genes from her parents; her father was a former Olympic swimming/diving coach turned Naval Commander and her mother was a champion downhill skier.

The sweet-looking beauty entered the entertainment arena as a model and made her TV debut in 1959 on the "Wagon Train" (1957) western series. Very much a free spirit, she was more interested in surfing and traveling around the world than a career. She combined both passions when she earned work as an underwater female stunt double for Lloyd Bridges on his hit series "Sea Hunt" (1958) as well as the TV series "The Aquanauts" (1960), which took her to ideal tropical settings. She also stunted for such movies as September Storm (1960) co-starring Joanne Dru and Mark Stevens.

On that movie set, she met and subsequently married fellow stunt diver Courtney Brown (he was Mr. Stevens' double in that film), who coached her in underwater shooting. They had a daughter, Tiffany. During this time, they based their lives in the Bahamas where most of their shooting occurred. They divorced, however, after a short time and she returned to Hollywood where she won the role of an Apache girl in the movie Rio Conchos (1964) with Richard Boone, Anthony Franciosa and Stuart Whitman. A few years later, she married actor James Mitchum, Robert Mitchum's eldest son, but they too split. Wende's career continued in the 60s with a couple of movies and a role in the "The Green Hornet" (1966) TV adventure series but she eventually dropped out of sight. Little was heard from her until reports of her death from cancer in 1997.

surf blurb addendum...malibu paddleout for Steve Stanley

From Cary Weiss:
Joe--  My dearest friend, Steve Stanley passed away yesterday, Nov. 13,
succumbing to liver cancer.  He would have turned 60 in December.  Steve
and his wife Cindy were at Mark Fragale's house for our post auction
gathering . You may remember him setting on the couch most of the time
with Cindy, blond hair. He was also my partner in the collecting  of
surfboards and memorabilia over the last couple of years.  Steve was
very sick then and we kept our fingers crossed he would make that final
journey for the auction and to spend a little  his remaining time with
his wife and friends (especially Don Stroud) in the Islands in July.
Steve was a consumate surfer, starting out around 8 years old in Venice,
at Toes Over and D & W's near the mouth of Ballona Creek-Playa Del Rey.
Later he was a San Clemente local, then a year or two in Hawaii and back
to the mainland where he was a longtime MSA member and dominating local
in the line-up at the Bu. He gave alot of himself to the groms coming
into the line-up and was respected by all. He was a terrific surfer, a
stylist with a beautiful left-go-right takeoff and stretch 5 across the face

On Sun. Nov. 18 at 10a.m at Surfrider Beach , Malibu , there will be
A Memorial celebration and paddle-out .  Friends and family are coming
from the Islands and across the mainland.  Mahalo- Cary

In 2008, I intend expanding to a more general surfriding analysis, along the lines of the Tahitian section. http://www.surfresearch.com.au/h_AncientBoards_0000_Menu.html
For any readers with a specific interest in Australian surfriding or alternative surfcraft, I also have uploaded some recent work on The Surf Ski: http://www.surfresearch.com.au/0000h_SurfSki.html

Also.... my (joe t.) one find was in Los Gringos by Wise..... For the Hawaiian section, it is a wonderful report. The ADA is a federal anti-discrimination statute that provides comprehensive civil rights protection for persons with disabilities.  Among other things, this legislation requires that all students with disabilities be guaranteed a learning environment that provides for reasonable accommodation of their disability.
If you believe you have a disability requiring an accommodation, you must contact the Disability Services Office (DSO) at (361)825-5816 or visit the office in Driftwood 101.  Any accommodations needed are required to come through the DSO.  The DSO will then contact your professor and set up necessary provisions.  Do not seek accommodations directly from your professor because professors do not have the authority to make such decisions/modifications.

From Tami Fuhrmann-Cramer" - Looking for info on Fuhrmann surfboards, her dad and uncle's surfboard company.  My dad just died at the end of June and unfortunately nobody really knows a whole lot about what happened to any boards that were left.  My dad and his brothers worked for Greg Noll in Hermoso Beach (or maybe it was Redondo Beach) in the early 60's and then they opened their own place around 1966.  I have a friend patching the only board he had left (from the 70's) and am really interested in finding others out there.  All info is greatly appreciated. hey_tamigirl@yahoo.com

From David Bell: A fun new book all about surfing in the sixties around Noosa, Queensland, Australia. www.noosasurfingthe60s.com.au

From Joel Smith from Peru: I went up north, where the Peruvian fishermen still use, on a daily basis, the reed crafts (called "Caballitos de Totora") that they used 2000 years ago.   They unquestionably rode waves with them... pre-dating the Polynesians and Hawaiians.
I took one out for a spin.  Not easy managing a wave without a rudder or fin of some sort.... but I had fun and amused the fishermen with my antics.  The paddle is a half stalk of bamboo used kayak style.

Visited many archeological sites - Chan Chan, Huaco del Sol y de la Luna, Sipan, El Brujo -- all pre-Incan civilizations that were primarily  maritime cultures.  Great stuff.

And I rode waves everyday -- Huanchaco, Puemape, Pacasmayo and, of course, Chicama.
I rode the longest wave of my life at Pacasmayo.  An overhead wave that reeled on forever.  It took me over a half hour to walk back to the take off point.

Then I went to Chicama, one of my fantasy waves.  Check the photos.
I arrived just as the swell was hitting on Friday afternoon.  Two shots taken from above on the cliff (one with my guide in it) show the take off spot and give an idea of the length of the ride as the wave wraps around the point all the way to the pier in town.
The wide shot was taken from my hotel window.  Notice that there is NO ONE OUT! (Friday)

Saturday was the peak of the swell but even then there was no more than 12 people in the water at anytime.... and all spread out.  I mean, a guy would take off at the point and you wouldn't see him for another hour. I surfed again on Sunday morning.  Again, no one out but me.
Chicama really needs a big swell to wrap around the point - but the result is perfection.  It is off shore all day.  Wave similar to a Malibu right or Pakalas... but much longer and faster.   Much faster.  No time for cutbacks.  Just pump down the line and tuck under the sections.

I surfed so much my body is wrecked.... but it was soooooo good.

Aloha,

From Marty Gecan Arlington Heights, Ill / San Clemente, CA. Cheers Surf blurb: Labor Day weekend means one thing to surfers on the Great Lakes, Dairy land surf classic in Sheboygan, Wisc. Hundreds (yes hundreds) of stoked surfers will converge on this middle Wisconsin harbor town to party with the Corona girls, compete in a paddle race, and God willing, hold a surf contest. I have personally surfed this town overhead faces which is a beautiful thing considering it's a LAKE. With surfers traveling 8-10 hours to spend the weekend, the vibe is reminiscent of my childhood days at the San Clemente pier, when Midget Smith ruled the line up, and once us kids were initiated we all just reveled in our love of surfing. Australians, Californians, East coast transplants, even a couple Hawaiians are among our numbers. Just trying to catch a wave, get wet, and maybe share our love for the ocean....Even on a lake.

Aloha, From Doug Cavanaugh: Chris Ahrens article in Sea Notes on Massai surfing. http://www.thecoastnews.com/articles/3170/ http://www.surfbooks.com/SeaNotesMaasaiTribe.jpg  and an Aug 12 gathering/raffle at D St Beach, Encinitas just South of Moonlight at 11 am in support of a fresh water well in Kenya. http://www.surfbooks.com/Maasaiflyer.pdf

From Watermarko: Some surf art on the walls where Longboard Wine is served along
with movies and vintage boards on the walls. And the wine is GOOD. http://www.longboardvineyards.com/ . check JAG's S.F. Ocean Beach site, too, if you're in S.F. (JAG=Judi Gorski) http://www.jagsart.com/ .

From Stuart Scott: Found photo of ex-Santa Barbara surfer Bob Cooper, in a Sunshine Coast (Queensland) library archive while researching Noosa Heads surfing during the 1960s. Cooper, still making boards at 70, and living just south of Noosa, says he doesn't remember ever seeing the photo taken at the Hayden Kenny board factory nearby Alexandra Headland January, 1965. However he remembers that Yater-shape fin, a new design then coming in to replace the ``area'' style. He put the fin on his own board, he says, and later sold it to a local tradesman. Cooper wishes he still had the board, and wishes he was as young and trim as he was in 1965. http://www.surfbooks.com/NoosaBobCooper65.jpg In ``Noosa: Surfing the '60s'', which comes out later this month, Cooper tells how he lived on Queensland's Sunshine Coast from 1964-66, glassing in the Hayden factory where Bob McTavish was the star shaper, and regularly surfing the string of idyllic points at Noosa, then a little-known beach town, now the site of an internationally-famous annual surf festival . ``We really did have it to ourselves. We used to come up in a car and be the only ones out. On weekends it would pick up – there'd be 20 or 30 out. But during the week, 15 would be the max, and our car alone held six. ``We'd be at Noosa whenever it broke. We'd work nights, we'd work early. Because Noosa's an all-day place. If we started at 6 we could be done with work by 3 or 4, be up here by 5, still have a few hours of sunlight and surf. Every day. We were young and fit and could do it, go home, go to bed, get up and do the same thing. So we didn't miss much surf at all. If it broke, you could be on it.'' www.noosasurfingthe60s.com.au
