Aloha,
From Craig Hibbard: this weekend: http://www.surfmonkeyrace.com/

Also From Craig: Surf Film Fest: http://beachshortsfilmfest.com/

From Geoff Cater:
Gary Lynch recently posted:
Re: the above article: "thanks to the shortboard, an Australian innovation"..........Hawaiian shortboards were around a long time ago, in the 1800's and some people (especially lots of kids) have used them since. Even the 1940 LA Ladder Co. brochure had a Blake short board called a breaker board. Bob Simmons built some. Quigg built some. And that guy up in Santa Cruz built them in the 1960's. And I'm sure many others built them as well. A small issue but never the less, inaccurate.
While “innovation” maybe too strong, there is a case that the Australian move to shorter boards in 1967 initiated the acceptance of smaller boards for the surfing industry at large.
( And that guy up in Santa Cruz built them in the 1960's – I take it this was one Jim Foley, who apparently had a photograph published in second edition of Surfer magazine – can anyone confirm this?)
Following the release Bob McTavish's Stoked! (2009) and the film Going Vertical in early 2010, I have spent the last six months reviewing my knowledge of the so-called “Shortboard Revolution”.
This week I have uploaded a number of source documents 1967-1968 and an associated draft paper, A period of transition: 1967-1968 "the shortboard revolution" (currently up to the end of 1967).
The paper, with links to the relevant source documents, is at:
http://www.surfresearch.com.au/1967_VeeBottom.html
Thesis
In the second half of 1967, intense competition between a group of elite surfers, shapers and manufacturers in Sydney, Australia, saw the beginnings of a progressive reduction in surfboard volume, commonly designated as the Shortboard Revolution.
This experimentation initiated further volume reduction into the early 1970s, profoundly changing surfing performance and board design worldwide.
As surfboard dimensions were progressively reduced, these smaller boards increased the speed at which maneuvers were completed and enabled surfers to ride deeper and longer in the critical part of the wave.
In the upload were also several additions to the source documents menu:
W. H. Skinner : Canoe Surfing in New Zealand, 1884.
http://www.surfresearch.com.au /1923_Skinner_NZ_Canoe_Surfing.html
Hi Sibley : Surf Sleds and Boards, 1928.
http://www.surfresearch.com.au /1928_Sibley_PopSc_June_p79.html
W.G. Marshall : The Cronulla SLSC Story, Part 2.
Includes a report on Duke Kahanamoku's visit to Cronulla Beach in 1915.
http://www.surfresearch.com.au /1968_Marshall_CronullaSLSC_Pt2.html
(Note for Sandy Hall- finally found the original publication after about 10 years of searching)
An esoteric entry, for those with a “big picture” perspective-
Alice Roberts : The Incredible Human Journey, 2009.
http://www.surfresearch.com.au /2009_Roberts_Human_Journey.html
Alice Roberts' book, companion to a five part BBC documentary, reviews and accesses the latest available archaeological and genetic evidence of spread of human beings across the planet.
It critically implies that a large portion of human colonization was initially accomplished by coastal movement, and subsequently along river systems.
Although the book does not directly deal with the exploration of the Pacific by the peoples of Polynesia, it clearly demonstrates that man's relationship with the marine environment dates back to the earliest transition out of Africa, some 125,000 years ago.
This was undoubtedly associated with the development of various types of watercraft.

From Sandy Hall (Duke biographer): I wanted to add a few words of my own in an unsolicited plug:
The new book, Sweetness and Blood , by Michael Scott Moore, is much more interesting than the starchy review it garnered in The Economist . (But, being reviewed in the Economist is itself a pat-on-the-back). Moore, a Californian who works as a journalist in Berlin, explores the offbeat in surfing -- eg how does surfing fare in Communist countries and in wartime, in impoverished countries etc. It looks far beyond Hawaii and California, giving a different perspective. It's part travelog, part memoir, part social commentary. I was fascinated at the number of people he met who taught themselves how to surf, from a chance newspaper photograph of a surfer, or magazine article. There's much to like in this brave new take, on a sweet, zany, and sometimes bloody sport. I rank the book ***** 5 stars of 5!

From Marcelo Louzada: Two Brazilian surfing books: the first one he believes is the first published in Brazil: "Surf - Sliding On The Waves":

The 2nd book cover he sent is "Fluir Magazine presents - The History of Surfing in Brazil - 50 Years of Adventure" which shows the beginning of Brazilian surfing on the cover:

"In 1938, Osmar Gonçalves, from the city of Santos/São Paulo aged 16, surfed
the first wave of Brazilian surfing history. Between December 1938 and
January 1939, Osmar and his friend Joao Roberto Suplicy Haffers "the Jua",
built the first Brazilian surfboard. The board was built from Popular
Mechanic Magazine. With technical support from the naval engineer Julius
Putz, Osmar and Jua were behind the required material. They bought the wood
indicated (cedar planks of four meters) and ran the project. Following the
tips friend Putz and guidelines of the magazine, produced a board of 3.60
meters and weighed 80 kg."

Re: Emil turning 100:
From Ken Haygood (Surfin' Since the 40's): Great of you to remember to honor this quintessential local waterman and no doubt oldest living surfer. Emil has been an inspiration to those of us who have been SD Lifeguards and long-time surfers.
From Gary Lynch (Tom Blake biographer): In any event, Emil is the real deal. And I bet the oldest living surfer right now.
Arthur Verge (Freeth article author.): Awesome!!! I do know that surfer Claude Horan (the one who gave Santa Cruz the term Steamer's Lane and the famous Univ. of Hawaii sculptor) is in his mid-90's as is Micki Moore (one of the great second unit directors - Raiders of the Lost Ark, Patton, etc.) is 94. Both were surfing next to the Venice Pier on the morning of December 7th. Neither knew that the other was there until I shared with them given the results of their separate interviews. Again - fantastic about Emil - can't think of anyone else who would match that. Best Wishes -
David H. Stern (co-author of Surfing California guide) Jerusalem: Does Emil Sigler still surf? "Pop" Proctor lived to be 99. I saw him still surfing in his late 80's, and I would guess he continued into his 90's. As for me, I will be 75 in October but haven't surfed since 2005, when I went surfing in the Gaza Strip before the whole Israel community had to leave. I will probably try to surf again this summer, despite having Parkinson's Disease.

Aloha,
From David Pu'u: A shot of Velzy from 1991:

From Hugo Verlomme: I confirm that my book "Cowabunga! Surf Saga" was the very first book on surfing in France (the book is a collector, hard to find to day). I had to explain to the publisher what surfing was. (1976) Not many people knew about it then! Now it's overcrowded!
From Steve Collins: Steve Hammon and "The Holden Gang" have asked me to pass this on - Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum----"THE FOAM YEARS" Opening Day -- June 20 Fathers Day -- 1:00 to 4:00 P.M. Will be on display for months.

From Jim Kempton: The second of a series of complimentary event webisodes available in the lead up to stop number 4 on the 2010 ASP Men's World Tour, the Billabong Pro, J'Bay, is available now.
Webisode 2 focuses on South Africa's hometown hero, the phenomenal Jordy Smith, who heads into his favourite event as the closest man to King Kelly Slater (USA) - the current world ranked #1. https://www.filesanywhere.com/fs/v.aspx?v=897262875f6373a56b68
From Peter Robinson: The Museum of British Surfing is stoked to launch its new branding and website, part of the development work funded by Leader 4 Torridge & North Devon.
The charity hopes its new identity will let the world's surf community know how proud we are of our surfing and heritage here in Great Britain.
The emphasis on the ‘wave' expresses one of the museum's core aims: to encourage surfers to consider the impact they have on the environment, the ocean and ultimately the waves they love to ride! http://www.museumofbritishsurfing.org.uk/

From Jeremy Oxenden: Old Scopitone music video of January Jones singing and beach blanket bingo sort of dancing with some surfing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8fIQSiD1AY&feature=player_embedded Scopitone was short-lived type of jukebox featuring a 16 mm film component. There are several more with beach scenes. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqMuoF69zAE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81oQR6-s6Vw&feature=related

Aloha,
From Marshall Parks: Paddle out for Hadji: The date is set for the paddle out. Friday, July 16 at 0900. At Tourmaline Surf Park. Parking will be difficult, try to arrive early. Please RSVP Ron at rstjohn1@san.rr.com if you plan to attend the paddle.
The reason for the delay is due to the backlog at Rosecrans. This date was chosen to accommodate out of state family members that will be attending the military ceremony, so that they may also attend the paddle out. 1935 Tourmaline: Emil Sigler, Don Pritchard, Dorian Paskowitz, and Bill "Hadji" Hein:

From Bob Feigel: The International Whaling Commission will hold its final vote on a proposal to legalize commercial whale hunting for the first time in a generation. More than 650,000 of us have signed the petition to protect whales -- but it's time to reach 1 million! At the whale summit in Morocco, an Avaaz team is setting up billboards, front-page newspaper ads, and a giant, constantly-updating petition counter -- all to ensure that delegates, from the moment they step off the plane until they cast their votes, will see from our explosive numbers that the world will not accept legal whale slaughter.
Let's soar past a million. Click to sign, and then forward:

From Sandy Hall: The Kahanamoku Ohana's Matriarch Jo-Anne Kahanamoku, Duke's niece, has died, aged 80. She was the daughter of Duke's brother, Samuel. Sam was an Olympic swimmer (1924) and all around waterman.
Jo-Anne was half Tahitian, half Hawaiian. She was an early member of the Waikiki Surf Club, and sailed on the Hokulea. The years before she turned 50 didn't count she told me once. At 50 she sailed on the Hokulea, and that began a metaphysical life for her.
The voyaging canoe will be involved in the scattering of ashes, along with a paddleout at Waikiki. She was a "warrior woman" and although she hated public speaking, she always spoke up when she felt it was needed; she was an acclaimed feather artist, and good, fun friend to hundreds, if not thousands thru'out Hawaii and the Pacific.

With Jane Schmauss of the California Surf Museum:

From Philippe Zibin: re French surfing books: the first one was by Hugo Verlomme: Cowabunga. Surf Saga! in 1976:

To my kowledge it's the first french book on surfing...most of french surfing books are from the 80's and 90's....the only one I know before that, is "Hawaii Iles de Reve" (Hawaii dream Islands) by Jacques Chegaray from 1956...I have a signed copy...but it's not a full surfing book...only 6 pages about surfing (surf-riding in the text)...more a sort of travel journal from the author who discovers the islands in the early 50's.
Some other books are translated novels such as "The Phamtom Surfer" from Caroline Quine....translated in "le beau garcon du pacifique" (the beautiful boy from pacific) edited in France in 1975. Think I have a list of all the french surfing books I know....have also, a 1962 city brochure from Biarritz with a picture or two of surfing...a "photo cinema" magazine focus on surf photography from 1965....and other sport mags with articles on surfing...between boring bicycle "tour de France" articles...and of course "Paris Match" magazines from the 60's, with some cool pics of french surfing with a funny article on this "new sport"....the guy who wrote it was not, with no doubt, a surfer.
From Jim Winniman: Anybody know about this work? Was it published as a magazine cover/interior artwork maybe? The painting is gouache on board - signed Mac Rae Gillies 1930: winnimanj001@hawaii.rr.com

From Jeremy Oxenden: Couple pics:

The next one with a note: Gene Cooper says this about PIGS .........
"The plan shape on some of the earliest Velzy pigs from the mid-50's was pretty extreme and I find those the most interesting. 16" nose, 17+" tail, 8" tail block and a beautiful combination of curves. At first glance they look pretty simple but if you take a closer look every contour and design element is very thoughtful and exactly in the right place, never better. I'll just say that the design is "subtly complex" or "complex in it's simplicity" not unlike what was being created by the artists and architects of the mid-century. Velzy's design was groundbreaking, enduring, and those early examples were pure art. I'm glad we live in a time when many surfers embrace surfings roots and designs. Riding a proper pig, nice and dense, sans modern rocker and modern foiling is just pure fun. A clean solid feeing that defies description, I'm hooked….again."

From Jim Kempton: On Thursday, June 10, 2010 Billabong held its 4th annual Design For Humanity benefit ( www.designforhumanity.com ) on the legendary NY Street Backlot at Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
100% of this year's ticket sales and proceeds from art show and product collaboration auction sales will be donated to Invisible Children ( www.invisiblechildren.com ), an organization raising awareness and funds for families affected by the long-standing war in Uganda, Africa.

From Jeremy Oxenden: Normandy Benjamin chatting to Gordon Blake and Ryan from Old Jersey:

Last of the tales from Gene Brown: What one hauled their board around in was a big part of the surfing culture. Times were different in the 1960's. I had a '49 Ford woodie in ace shape that I paid $100 for. Then there was a 1947 Mercury woodie barn find that my buddy got for $35 down in Elsinore. He tired of it and I got it for $75. Cherry? It had a straight body, good tires, excellent wood, the spotlight, original radio and all the other extras. Painted it maroon, put on a new white leather top and after many miles of up and down the coast took the Greg Noll surf team and my brother and one of his gremmie friends to the east coast. Great rig but one night....of course I'm from southern California, what else would happen...no anti freeze so adios woodie. A friend back east eventually sold it for me for $75. My, things have come on a bit since then. So, in the summer of l965 I rented a shop near the Belmont Shore pier from which to peddle my cartoons and hatch cover tables. Driving along in Long Beach I spot a really straight ahead 1948 Ford woodie for sale by the original owner. What a gouger. Hit me a hundred bucks for it. Joe Barnett and I took it down to Tijuana for a new top, upholstery and carpet. That thing ran so good. Up to Santa Cruz, down to Mexico, all over the place. Got smacked into. For the record surfers I knew and their board haulers. Joe Barnett in addition to his T touring and the mail truck had a beautiful Chevy Nomad station wagon, Dennis Handy, football star at Newport High School and later Navy Seal in Nam had a '55 chevy panel. We took it once to El Monte Legion Stadium to see Jimmy Reed. Only white guys there. Not to worry. Dennis was a warmed over bad news terror. After a few snotty remarks about surfers he informed them of their immediate serious problems if they didn't shut up and they knew by the look in his eye he meant it. About that time the announcer started to rile them up again with snide remarks about white guys and surf boards and from a side door in walked Jimmy Reed, his band and Mrs. Reed. I hurriedly went to her, said that I was doing a paper for school (I really was) on Jimmy but don't know if I was going to make it out of here alive. She was neat. Smiled big, looked at the announcer and then asked me what I wanted to hear Jimmy play...Bright Lights, Big City, Big Boss Man and Got Me Running and Hiding I replied. She relayed this to Jimmy and a grand time was then had by all. Calvin Delaney who lived in southern California and the islands had a '38 Dodge panel that was made to sleep in and haul boards. Bob Williams, father of Dave, had a, I believe 1950 Chrysler woodie to haul his wave riders around in. Not entirely related to the subject. Dick Kraft was one of the most creative hot rodders that ever lived. A couple of his roadsters won big in the Oakland roadster show and one was on a l954 issue of Hot Rod magazine. Kraft is credited with inventing the worlds first dragster. A Model A Ford that first raced at the Santa Ana drag strip. He was nutcakey about body surfing at the Wedge in Newport Beach. Down there every chance he got. Came from there still wet the first time he ran the A dragster (which he had driven on city streets from Anaheim) During the war he body surfed all over the world and if you want to know anything about him he is on the net. I was the last guy to see Dick before he died in January of 2009. Not enough space here to retell some of his great stories about fun in the ocean. My other board hauler that I had brought home from the army was a like new 1937 Plymouth sedan. When I bought the Merc woodie I sold the Plymouth to a kid for fifteen dollars. Bob Martin, of my previously mentioned, Mexico surf run had a l947 Chevy panel that I ended up with for awhile. Dick Dale had an Econoline Ford van for his boards. A book in itself could be written about some unique surf wagons that were once a common sight on the beaches of southern California. If you look at ebay motors or in Hemmings Motor News you will seel that fifty thousand dollars is not an unusual price for many woodies. Happy trails. Gene

Another installment from Gene Brown, author of Hodad's Beware :
Some memories of early surfing history. The first surfer I ever knew was Louis Grabbit who lived in Mission or Ocean Beach in San Diego sometime in the late 1930's up through the fifties. On Sundays my father who was a tight buddy of Louis would take us to his home for a visit. How could I forget the monstrous, fat and long old wooden board (we also saw ones made of, I think, plexiglass) which had a small window in it for viewing into the sea. Louis would take us to someplace around La Jolla and show us his surfing skills. He wasn't the only one to have a big board. My little brother and I walked around that area and saw more than a few of the big boards either leaning against a house or hung by ropes from the ceiling in a garage. I also think Louis was the first one I ever heard to use the word bitchin'. There was much camaderie between surfers in the early days. Sort of an all for one and one for all spirit. As a sidenote along these lines. On full moon nights a carload or two of us would go down to the Huntington Cliffs, when you could still park on PCH, and have super times on those moonlit waves. Joe DiGiorgio who I believe owns a motel now in Santa Barbara was one of us along with some others who came to see their pictures later in Surfer Magazine. North of the border was great but down below Tijuana at Kilometer 39 were cliffs to walk down and great sets. Even that place got crowded by the seventies. Another side bar. One day David Hushman, Eddie Fairfield, Dick Booher, Bob Martin, Billy Waters and myself took my '49 woodie to K39. Was I innocent at the time.? This was a few months after my getting out of the army in l96l. For some reason my companions insisted that I drive. All right, fine. So, after an exceptional day on the waves we head back through Tijuana. I am instructed to pull over and park it. Also, they had something to do so could I guard our valuables? Sure. After my watching the glow of lights along Revolution Avenue for about half an hour my comrades of the waves returned. Off to the border crossing. Dicky Booher pretends like he has been heavily into the cooking sherry. The border guards make him pour out whatever he was drinking. Off we go. About three minutes north there was much whooping and shouting as they pulled stuff from under the seats. Bennies, reds, and all kinds of stuff I'd never seen in my sheltered life. So. They all get ripped, produce an air pistol and let fly all the way home. Without mentioning names. They were all dedicated surfers and good at it. One went back later to Mexico, put a lot of weed in the valve covers of a corvette. It caught fire and who knows how many people got loaded within a mile around? He spent seven years in San Quentin and came home looking quite old. Another, of a prominent athletic bent in his youth drank a considerable amount of straight shots at a bar in Anaheim, walked out into the cold February night and died in an alley. This was when I worked at the Anaheim Bulletin and for his mothers sake I wrote an obit that almost compared him to Jim Thorpe or Jesse Owens. Most surfers I knew then were health nuts but every group has that dark sheep fringe. Speaking of. Joe Barnett, a Long Beach hot rod and surfing legend. They broke the mold on him. He had a 1930 Model A US Postal van with an uncle sam wants you picture on the side. A highly intelligent and fun guy. I spent time with him at old tin can beach, the cliffs of course and other surfing spots. At night we would get into his 1926 Model T Touring car that had a healthy big bore chevy engine and headed up to the Hollywood area. He usually took a surfboard along in case things might be inviting on our return trip along the coast highway. Joe has disappeared. Friends claim he sold all and moved down to the Amazon River. Mike, I am just rambling along here as the memories surface. More to come. Gene

Aloha,
From John Bishop: re: Bill "Hadji" Hein: This info is for all who knew him or would have liked to. Sadly he passed at 10:00 PM last night, Thursday. We will be planning a paddle out in about 3 weeks.
He would be turning 92 next week and had just renewed his motor cycle license last week. He served as a Lifeguard in the late 1930's along Mission Beach. Here is Hadji on the right with Doc Paskowitz:

From Al Hunt: Magazines Wanted: To complete my collection of 60's mags I need a few Makaha programs and only a few others. What I am after are some missing ones and others that need upgrading. Willing to buy, trade or partial trade/buy. Not willing to pay extortion prices though.
They are:
Competition Surf Summer 1967 volume 2#1.
Greg Noll Funnies and Cartoon.
Petersen's Yearbook 1963 HARDBOUND (does it exist)
SI Surfing Illustrated volume 4#1 June. My cover is not too good.
Surf by Mike Mann 1977 volume 1#4 Fall. Again cover poor.
Surfing East volume 1#2 Fall 1965.
Surfing News Voice of Surfing World EAST COAST edition March 1967 volume 1#1.
Surfer Calendars 1963-74 and 1981 Surfing Calendar 1980
Makaha programs 4th, 5th, 8th, 17th and 21st. Not sure if 18th – 1970 exists. Randy Rarick and myself believe it does not but if someone has one please tell us.
That's it for old stuff but I still need some new stuff so if anyone has collections of: Californian ‘Waves” mag , “Surf Scene”, East Coast “Waverider”, East Coast “Shred”, “Inside del Mar”, “Hapa”, “Jacksonville Surfer” or “South East Surfer” as it was named later, “North Coast Surf Express”, “Kema”, “Gulf Coast Surf”, “FLA Surf”, “Flat”, “Channel”, “Beach n Waves” and finally “Atlantic Surfer”. I need select editions of these titles to complete my collection and have over 5,000 magazines to trade with or can purchase as long as a reasonable price, which these mags should be as they are mostly 1980 onwards.
Help Al complete the most extensive collection in the world. Currently just over 14,800 different magazines. Better in Al's collection than in your garage or storage room.al@aspworldtour.com

Recently have been in touch with Gene Brown via Mike Jipp. Gene did the cartoon book Hodad's Beware and worked on surf movies and posters.

He has written of some fun/interesting adventures in his day to Mike and okayed me pasing them along:
Mike: You do have some treasures. The June 24 1963 Don Brown long poster. I did the lettering on it. It was one of our last shows on the west coast before we headed east. Greg Noll . Is he still alive? He and I were in my 1947 Mercury Woodie and got lost in New York City. We circled an area close to Times Square for two hours before we found our hotel. He was quite tired from the flight. Puts several quarters into a magic fingers thing that vibrates the mattress and we were awake all night. Other than that the east coast tour was fun times. Loaned my Velzy board to a guy who won the east coast championship with it.....on really wimpy waves. On the trip Don Brown and I spent a few nights with Murph the Surf who gained fame for his late night visit to a museum to pick up the Star of India diamond. We also surfed Nags Head when it was beyond description for no people and beautiful sets. And a lot of other places. Hope all is well your way. Brown and one more, some light duplication: Mike: Fasten your seat belt this is going to be a bumpy one. Borrowed my surfboards before going in the Army in 1959. Bought a small Velzy the week I got out and used it from the Huntington Cliffs down to K-39 in Baja. A stripper who worked at the Largo on Sunset Blvd. teamed me up with a publisher Robert I. Lethe who backed my first book Hodads Beware ! He paid the rent for three months on a place in Venice. I showed up three weeks later and he was a bit stern about how come I wasn't out working? Because Hodads Beware! was finished. It sold quite well...about 10,000 copies of the first edition and then, I think, 5,000 for an oversized second edition. For Lethe, I also drew three different surf posters that sold pretty good. One thing leads to another. Met somebody in Carmel, California when Davey Williams (of Williams Low Buck Tools) and I were headed for the 1962 Worlds Fair in Seattle in a restored 1933 Packard. Dave's dad owned Williams Sporting Goods in the 1940's and fifties. He belonged to the San Onofre Beach Club and was an early promoter and seller of surfboards in Orange County. Guy from Carmel who was a tourist from LA invited me to party at Don Brown's home in Pasadena. Don had produced Surf's Up and Have Board Will Travel. They bombed at first. I arranged an appropriate sound track for them and away they went. I narrated both these films up and down the east and west coast in l963 and l964. We were pioneers in the east when we showed up in a 1949 Chevrolet milk truck made to sleep in. Showed surf films in Great Neck, Long Island and other towns there I can't remember. Highlight was in Surf City New Jersey where we were greeted with open arms by Wimpy Paulsworth, a popular local character. We played the movies for about a week in the local Fire House to very enthusiastic crowds. Then down to Virginia Beach, Florida and finally to the home of Murph the Surf. Great visit. While heading south I had one of my greater surfing moments. Nags Head North Carolina was deserted then. We had miles of beach to ourself/ Following summer the late Jim Freeman and I took both Don Brown and Freeman films east. We did quite well. That summer I picked up Greg Noll at a New York Airport. He had come east to promote his boards and surfing in general. I mentioned in a previous email that we circled this one area in NYC for two hours before finding our hotel. We had to share a bed. Greg puts coins into the Magic Fingers box which got the bed to shaking all night long. I remember Greg commenting..."What is going on? We fight new york city traffic and then spent the night in a bed that shakes like a Model T Ford." He was well received at shows in NY and New Jersey. Forgot to mention. The previous summer I loaned my Velzy board to a hot local surfer who won the east coast championships with it. Along the way met Bob Zelley who had ordered a Hobie Board in the 1950's and had a signed letter from Hobie Alter indicating that Hobie hoped he enjoyed the board. That board is still in the family. Assorted tid bits. Don Brown knew almost everybody of note in the world of surfing. Apparently there were some fine times in the islands with Bud Browne, Freeman, Severson, Noll, Rick Grigg, Butch Van Arnsdale and many more. So. Brown wanted me to write a surf movie for the big screen. I did. It was originally called Surfari. Talk about a fried rice foul up. Brown did most of the directing which took place in Hermosa and Redondo Beach. The late Milton Blair claims to have written this movie and changed the name to Blue Surfari. Not so. I busted my ass on it in the spring of 1964 and it premiered on Hollywood Boulevard I believe in 1968. Somebody really did a number on it. It was embarrassing to watch but did have some good wave action. During all this I met Dick Dale of Dick Dale and the Del Tones. Mentioned him in one of my Hodads Beware! books. Everybody else I mentioned threatened to sue me. Not Dick. He invited me down to his house for dinner and we were pretty good friends for awhile. I would go with him when he did the music for some of those beach blanket bingo flicks of the early sixties. Had some nice talks with Annette Funicello . She was a lovely person. Incidentally Dick really could surf. He was a good guy but got screwed by people he trusted and turned a tad cynical after awhile. Dale Velzy was one of my favorite guys. He was shaping down by Newport Beach and I remember his lack of respect for some who had been formally educated. He knew me but when some of my buddies from Orange Coast College came along he would ask them if they were college pricks or did they really know anything. I liked to hear Velzy talk about his archery exploits. A big part of surf history for many of us was the Redenvouz Ball Room in Newport Beach. Fun times? Oh, boy. Looked like bleached blonde surfer convention on saturday nights. Woodies predominated. I did cartoon surf murals from northern California to Seattle in the sixties. They are probably all gone now. Will continue this but will close now with. I had an incredible collection of surf stuff. My home, manuscripts I'd worked on for two years, about 5,000 books, family heritage going back to the 1840's, rare WWII stuff my uncles had brought home and more all burned up. In one hour our home went to the ground. It was just before Christmas a couple of years ago. My wife died two days before Christmas and as we had been a 37 year love affair it was horrible for awhile. I'll never be able to get some of the surfing stuff I had but would like to get a repro, if possible, of Don Brown's Surfs Up and Have Board, Will Travel and now Issue No. l of Hodads Beware. I also would dearly like to find a vid of Have Board, Will Travel and Surf's Up. As memories return will send you more. Gene

From Ben Marcus: re: Randolph James' Santa Cruz pics and jots: He is right that the Santa Cruz/San Lorenzo Rivermouth is not usually good in July, but there are exceptions.
During the El Nino summer of 1982/1983, the Rivermouth had an epic sandbar that lasted well into August.
I had a hotdog wagon on the beach at Seabright/Castle Beach then and I remember leaning out of the back day after day, and watching Rivermouth firing during a summer that had an awful lot of south swells.
Who knows how different Rivermouth was before they put the harbor in, but 1885 could have been an El Nino year, and there could have been perfect waves breaking out there on a big southern hemi.
Good enough to make some princes chop down some trees and go surfboard swimming.

I asked Ben if I could run this stuff and he sent me another pic...very cool!

The Governor's order establishes the Duke Kahanamoku Surfing Reserve, which includes surf breaks bounded by the Ala Wai and the Waikiki War Memorial Natatorium, as well as the North Shore Surfing Reserve, which includes surf breaks from Ali‘i Beach in Hale‘iwa to Sunset Beach. Aloha,
From Randolph James: re: Santa Cruz Hawaiian princes and surfing Santa Cruz:
My great great grandfather was one of the founding town fathers of Santa Cruz.
He settled in the area (first in the Redwood Estates in the mountains) and then in the city itself in the early 1860's .. I've done quite a bit of research about him and the family and remember seeing the 1885 article and a few other articles about the 'young Hawaiian princes' while doing the research.
I surfed the Santa Cruz area quite a bit in the 1960's & 70's which is why this article still interests me.
My great grandfather was a photographer so I've attached a few 1880's photos he took of the area.
FYI the photo of the Santa Cruz Waterfront in the mid-1880's erroneously describes the river mouth as located far right.
In fact the river mouth is located just in front of the jutting portion of land just about dead center in the picture. That is where the mouth of the San Lorenzon River is located, thus the name 'river mouth.'
The area they have erroneously identified would in present day be located just to the left of the existing wharf.
Another interesting thing about this story is the month of the article; July.
Everyone realizes that a surf spot can change over time.
And no doubt rivermouth was destroyed when the santa cruz harbor was developed and the breakwater was installed.
But the best place to surf in that area was actually just off the prominence of land that sticks out.
The peaks in the right conditions were picture perfect that would peel and tube in both directions.
But they needed a decent north-western swell and it was usually the best in late winter and early spring when the sandbars (caused by the sand moving in and out of the San Lorenzo River) had a chance to form.
My conclusion being that in July it couldn't have been that great!
But that would be consistent with the description about the danger of the rocky cliff.
That area was one of my favorite.
You could walk from one side of the point to the other through a large cave (tunnel) connecting each side.
The point has since collapsed and the cave has disappeared.
1. River mouth (just above the head of the swimmer)

2. River mouth (far right) a closer on the beach

3. River mouth would be to the right (out of the picture) with the bath house(s) on the left

4. The area just to the left of the first wharf is the area misidentified in the article ... FYI the point on the far right is where Cowells surf break is located with "Indicators" surf break just off the point and around the point up the coast a few hundred yards is where Steamers Lane is located.

From Fred Hemmings via Drew Kampion: What happened to the Hawaii Surfing Reserve Bill? Some have asked how SB2646 (the Hawaii Surfing Reserves), a simple bill honoring surfing in Waikiki and on the North Shore , could have been killed after receiving an unanimous vote in the Senate as well as passing through several unanimous committee votes in both the House and Senate. This video, which was taken on the last day of session in the House, speaks for itself and is an unfortunate testament to our process. Thanks goes to those speaking in support of the bill during the floor session in the House.

From Gary Lynch: 1918 from the CDC National Center for Injury Prevention and Control: "In 1918, 13 people drowned in rip currents in a single day at San Diego's Ocean Beach, garnering local and national news attention. Beach attendance that day was estimated at 5,000. City officials cited inadequate lifeguard protection as a cause of the tragedy, and as a result, initiated a municipal lifeguard service. The ocean conditions have changed little since then. San Diego's local leaders view the 17 miles of oceanfront shoreline, which include Ocean Beach, as a safely managed tourist attraction due to the presence of lifeguards. Despite an average estimated annual attendance of 15 million people and over 7,000 rescues at the major lifeguarded beaches, the average number of drownings in areas under lifeguard protection is between zero and one annually." I guarded in San Diego...and that is about right... 1 or none drown in guarded areas each year. My brother guarded many years in O.B. and when the rips were pulling in August, they were pulling them in in bunches and wearing themselves out! (joe t.) |

a message from Fred Hemmings re: Hawaii Surfing Reserve Bill in Jeopardy:
A last minute effort by one individual has jeopardized the passing of SB2646 (Hawaii Surfing Reserve Bill). It is extremely important that Hawaii representatives and senators know that there are thousands supporting this bill rather than one vocal, misinformed, and misguided individual who has opposed the bill. As we all understand and know, the Hawaii Surfing Reserve Bill (SB2646) is ceremonial only in nature and recognizes the cultural and historical value of two surfing spots…Waikiki and the North Shore. (Makaha was taken out as a Hawaii Surfing Reserve in yesterday's There are no limitations or regulations involved in this bill which clearly defines its purpose as memorializing and recognizing these two Surfing Reserves.
Final vote on this bill will be tomorrow (Thursday, April 29) in both the House and the Senate. It would be of great benefit if you could send an email to the following Representatives and Senators expressing your strong support for SB2646 (Hawaii Surfing Reserve Bill) with a line or two regarding the value of the bill to Hawaii and the surfing world. Please do not include this email in your communications and it would be helpful if you “BCC” us on your email. Attached is a copy of the most recent version of this bill. Here is the text of the 1885 article and comments by Gary Lynch, Malcolm Gault Williams, and Geoff Cater:
I've transcribed it faithfully, I think .... (I did keep adding words without knowing it. joe t.) Question marks where I wasn't sure of the letters/words....
IT SAYS: "The breakers at the mouth of the river were very fine and? here? ???cred? the very p? (primest?priniest?princest?) of fun, at least, so said those who were 'in the swim'. Some thirty or forty swimmers were dashing and tossing? and plunging thru the breakers, going out only to be tossed back apparently at the will of the waves and making some nervous on-lookers feel sure that they were about to be dashed against the rocks. The young Hawaiian princes were in the water, enjoying it hugely and giving interesting exhibitions of surf-board swimming as practiced in their native islands. One of the young fellows afterward jumped from the railway bridge, but the water proved too shallow, and he was stunned and breathless for some little time after. The evening was quite as delightful as the afternoon. At the river the S.C.City Band played its finest airs by the light of an immense bonfire and boating was the order of the evening. Guitar music and singing added to the charm of the scene and the hours sped all too rapidly. "
From Gary Lynch: Many of us pseudo historians have discussed this article and a few others. There is no hard evidence in print or otherwise that these three Hawaiians had stand up boards and none of us think they would have been olos if they had a stand up size board. We believe someone surfed the mainland before this event and there are many reasons to back that up. Joe Tabler has found evidence in books that wave riding was accomplished using boats and other craft. Even so, and with the Dole Aloha Washington surfers, nothing really took off until Freeth.
That's how I see it. The SC myth needs to be debunked before people in 50 years from now (when we are all dead) pick up on these fictional SC pieces and think it's fact.
From Malcolm Gault Williams: I concur with Gary that this story is being blown way out of proportion, with a lot of conjecture passing as facts.
Olo's? No way. Alaia's? Highly doubtful, unless the Princes did the finish work themselves (remember the concave aspect). Planks? Yeah, I can see that. Kioe (Paipo)? Most likely.
From Geoff Cater:
Some initial comments (and as is often the case, the report invites further questions/research) :
1. The report of "surfboard-swimming" most probably indicates prone surfing.
Given that riding while standing requires considerable skill, if this was in evidence it could be assumed that this would have been reported.
If they used small prone boards, suitable timber would be readily available and relatively easy to construct.
A digression:
Unlike most with an interest in surfing history, I feel that the skills of body and prone surfers have been significantly under valued.
Also note that the ability to ride standing is probably as much a function of wave quality and the rider's skill as the dimensions of the board.
Compare and contrast Finney: Surfing (1996) on Boards, page 16.
From a modern perspective is is easy to overlook that any type of wave riding activity before the 20th century would have been viewed as impressive by Europeans.
Note that the initial reports from Hawaii only indicate prone surfing, the earliest report of riders "sometimes standing erect" is Rev. William Ellis in 1825.
The earliest report of riding while standing is by James Morrison in Tahiti in 1788.
Of the published images of surfriding 1830-1890, half show the riders either prone, kneeling or sitting.
2. While photography was becoming widespread in the late 19th century, the early cameras were bulky and generally did not readily capture action.

Frizot, Michael (ed) : A New History of Photography.
Konemann Verlagsgesellsvhaft mbH. Bonner Str 126, D-50968 Kohn.
English Edition 1998, page 182.
3. The newspaper article reports the Princes' appearance as an "exhibition" , apparently in conjunction with other organized beach activities on the day.
If so, this could indicate that for the riders this was not a one off occurrence and they had possibly surfed the location previously.
4. Also note the high diving act : "one of the young fellows (presumably one of the Hawaiian Princes) ... jumped from the railway bridge" .
Diving and jumping from extreme heights is also reported by several commentators as a Polynesian "sport" (sorry, no definite references) - an activity involving daring, skill, style and thrills with some parallels to surfriding.
5. Certainly the existence of popular surf-swimming activity ( "thirty or forty swimmers dashing .. and plunging through the breakers" ) in 1885 is worth further examination - does this indicate a rudimentary form of body surfing?
This would roughly parallel the development of body surfing in Australia in the 1890s.
6. While it is known that Polynesians, particularly Hawaiians, travelled around the world in the 19th century (mostly as crew on whaling vessels) and no doubt had occasion to employ their surfing skills, it is unclear if they had any influence on exporting these skills to local communities.

6. If, as has been suggested, this event initiated the development of a contemporary local (Santa Cruz) surfriding culture, then one would expect to locate further documentation in later editions of The Daily Surf .
Further research would appear warranted.

Put on your thinking caps.....A Searching question.......
From Stuart Scott: Maybe your readers can help me: I'm trying to find out which original photo was the inspiration for the tube riding mural painted on this Aussie panel van (by Holden, GM's Australian operation) around mid 1977. Was it Pipeline? Or maybe Backdoor, and the artist reversed it? The van, called Sea Witch, has become famous and the artist died last year. Trying to find out more for a book I'm writing about the surf-inspired Australian panel van boom of the 1970s. Write Stuart @ noosa_surfingthe60s@yahoo.com.au

Don't want to push my luck, but -- (while casting your minds and perhaps eyes over old Surfer and (more likely) Surfing World magazines ...) Anyone know the source for this surf art, used by Ford Australia in its panel van advertising in 1978? Looks like it was based on a Bustin' Down The Door era photo - ??

Another Searching question coming uppppp......
From Bob Green : Looking for film/info : The film was shown in Sydney late 1957. Leigh Tingle, now 72, saw the film and made a paipo board he still rides:
http://mypaipoboards.org/interviews/LeighTingle/Leigh_Tingle_2009-0914.shtml
The film was either The Big Surf or Surfing in Hawaii . I was hoping
to find out whether either film contained bellyboard footage and the
details of the footage (type of board surfed, who was surfing etc)?

Other than a wave or two in an old surf movie, the only paipo footage
I am aware of is:
Bellyboarding 1964 by Barry McGuigan. (features Leigh Tingle)

Paipo Surfing 1958-1965 (features John Waidelich and Jim Growney) -

There is also the 1963 footage of Val Ching riding paipo stand up.

Aloha,
From Jeremy Oxenden: We just lost a great old timer today, the nicest Jersey Surfer you could hope to meet, Tommy Bates. Tommy and his bother Richard made hollow ply wood boards in the late 50's and fiber glass boards in the late 60's and worked at the Freedom surf board factory in its early days. He was a Great Surfer and Ding Dr. He lived in NZ for some years in the 70's, had a holiday home in Carteret Normandy and surfed there. He was always great fun to surf with.

Bibliographical additions from Geoff at Surf Research: (#2 has a board with a sheet metal deck?!! )
1. I was recently emailed by Howard Fink who noted that Hi Sibley's 1935 design article in Popular Science Magazine is now posted on google.books:
http://books.google.com/books?id=VicDAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA79&dq=Hi%20Sibley&lr&as_pt=MAGAZINES&pg=PA79#v=onepage&q=Hi%20Sibley&f=false
While this is noted in DeLaVega et.al: 200 Years (2004) page 56 and I have included these in my surfresearch.com.au Plans and Specifications Menu, Howard also noted an earlier article by Sibley detailing two prone board designs.
2. Published in Popular Science Magazine in 1928, one board is of hollow construction (with a sheet metal deck ?!!), possibly indicating that Tom Blake was not the only one experimenting with hollow boards around this time.
It is also posted on google.books at:
http://books.google.com/books?id=XycDAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PP1&pg=PA57#v=twopage&q&f=false
Please report if the links do not connect (the bottom one posted as a link, but not the top one after several attempts).
3. I also recently came across a detailed and enthusiastic report of canoe surfriding in New Zealand circa 1884 and published in The Journal of Polynesian Society in 1923.
I will be formatting this and adding it to the surfresearch.com.au Source Documents Menu in the next couple of weeks.

Book additions to his site, recently made:
McTavish, Bob: Stoked!
Hyams Publishing.
PO Box 171 Huskisson, NSW 2540, 2009.
www.hyams.com.au
Editors: Rosanne Fitzgibbons and Brian Purcell.
Hard cover, 431 pages, black and white photographs, Some of My Friends, Glossary, Index.
Review
Bob McTavish's enthusiasm for surfing, and life generally, permeate Stoked!, covering his surfing career up to 1968, which leaves open the possibility of a further volume covering the next 40 years.
While the formative years in Queensland as a member of Caloundra Surf Life Saving Club are highly interesting, for the reader who has closely followed McTavish's numerous media contributions, many of the stories from the 1960s are extremely familiar.
Indeed, in some cases their re-telling here seems to lack some of the freshness evident in the original published versions.
Some minor errors in dates or spelling (Milner, not Millner, page 38), are probably the responsibility of the editors.
A tendency to somewhat overstate the author's impact on the surfing industry is evident, for example the account of the development of the Vee bottom board during 1967 (Part Eight).
Midget Farrelly had already established the "lightweight" stringerless as an industry standard by 1966 and he played a major role in the subsequent radical reduction in board lengths.
In 1973, McTavish wrote: "At the same time Midget's shop at Palm Beach was running stiff competition with us at Keyo's.
As we'd cut 2" off, Midget would cut 4" off, then vice versa."
Significantly, he rejects the commonly held myth that his and Nat Young's plus nine foot Vee bottom surfboards taken to Hawaii in December 1967 initiated the Short Board Revolution (pages 383 to 396).

A beautifully presented book, while similar in format to Volume I above, this a far superior work.

Originally published as a Surfer magazine poster, it was the first of the series to be sold-out.

clippings, Gallery, Acknowledgements, About the Author.
Review
A series of interviews with Tasmanian surfers based around a number of stock questions posed by the author (When did you start surfing?, etc) with archival and contemporary photographs.
Given the project is based on oral history, it is esentially focused post-1958 with little reference to early recreational surfing history and the surf life saving movement.
Unfortunately the is no interview with Tony Hardy, often cited as a major influence on Tasmanian surfing.
There are some technical anomolies, for examle "Michael Petterson (sic) was unbelievable at flowing on twin fins" , page 48.

Review
Initially visiting the Hawaiian Islands to cover the 1980 Honolulu Marathon, most of the book records Thompson and Steadman's stay on the Kona coast of the large island, Hawaii.
While surfing has only a minor role in Thompson's story, there are several outstanding surfing illustrations by Ralph Steadman.

Review.
A beautiful collection of surfing themed photographs by an Australian master of the genre.
They provide an rich historical portrait of the radical changes in surfriding and surfboards during the period, if from a strictly personal perspective.
This is probably most evident in the chapter Honolua Bay, pages 26 to 33, where Matt Warshaw writes this "marked the ... arrival of the shortboard" (quoted from his Encyclopedia of Surfing , 2004).
This evaluation is historically contentious.
Also note that "Nat Young at Winkipop, 1969" (pages 3 and 4) was originally published in 1969 on the cover of Witizig's Surf International magazine (Volume 2, Number 4).
A bellyboardrider (riding on the outside of Nat) has apparently been brushed out of the later version.

Soft cover, black and white illustrations, unpaginated.
Review.
A detailed construction manual for the buiding of fibreglassed balsa wood or foam core surfboards.
There is a very brief, but informative history of surfboards in Australia.
Also note current release of documentary: Going Vertical: The Shortboard Revolution
http://www.goingvertical.info/
My review:
While perhaps entertaining for the general viewer, for anyone with a serious interest in the history of surfriding Going Vertical is demonstrably less than “the truth on who started the Shortboard Revolution.”
Without any of the critical insight evident in the ABC recent “Bombora” documentary (self-interest acknowledged), it simply rounds up the usual suspects and regurgitates a standard collection of well-worn myths and legends.
Hopefully, David Bradbury's political documentaries exhibit a level of rigorous analysis clearly lacking in this production.
(Paraphrasing Basil Fawlty: “Don't mention Midget Farrelly … I mentioned him once but I think I got away with it” ).

Aloha,
From Eric Sandoval: Kevin Hall passed away on Thursday, I wanted to let the other parties involved with his book and Kevin's friends know about his unfortunate passing. There will be a memorial service this Tuesday in Simi Valley, please contact Robin Hall at 805.522.0203
From the Hall Family: It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Kevin Hall. B orn in June 8, 1962 Kevin had an “extreme” passion for adventure. He participated in anything that gave him an adrenalin rush such as parasailing, sky diving, surfing, and scuba diving. He loved the ocean and all things associated with the ocean. He had a boat in Channel Islands Harbor that he lived on for a couple years. He was an avid beach camper along the Ventura Coast. He enjoyed travelling to Hawaii and San Jose del Cabo, Mexico to enjoy the surfing, the family time, and of course the scallop tacos at Rossa's Taqueria. He amassed an extensive surf wax collection and was a contributor to the book, “Surfboard Wax; A History” by Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner.
He held many jobs over his varied life: scuba diving instructor, certified rescue diver, professional urchin diver, oil rig worker (off the coast of Santa Barbara), diver at Marine World in the shark tank and an air flight controller for Pleasant Hawaiian Holidays. He was very talented in various construction trades, and ultimately settled into plumbing and started his own successful plumbing company of 18 years, Hall Plumbing, Inc.
Please join us in a celebration of Kevin's life and memorial service, which will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at Centerpoint Church located at 2369 Royal Avenue in Simi Valley, California 93065. A reception will follow at Kevin and Robyn's home. For further information, please contact Robyn at 522-0203.

From Mike Jipp in the Great Northwest: i see that billabong has oregon for that wave we have here. this year was not all that clean and big. also if you only new the real story behind this whole mess of the reef. the real name of the place is called tackle busting reef . the wave is off a place called canyons state park so its not even in the nelscott area. the wave was also founded and surfed by others before the person that claims to have found it really didn't. he won't even let the best local surfers that tow it all the time in his stupid contest. just needed to throw in my 2 cents

From Gary Sahagen: The Twenty-Third Annual HB Longboard Crew Pier Paddle will be held on February 13, 2010 at 10am. The race has been postponed by the organizers due to safety concerns. The high winds, rain and tornado warnings have resulted in a decision to hold the race next Saturday. http://www.hblongboardcrew.org/

Picture From John Elwell/The John Elwell Collection... Ron Drummond at Dana:

the back of the card with a quote by Willard Bascom, author of Waves and Beaches:

From John Elwell: Re: the Unforgettable Ron Drummond:
It was one of those big winter days that are so rare at the Tijuana
Sloughs in 1951. Dempsey Holder and a number of top surfers showed up
and a new not well known surfer in our parts, and unforgettable Ron Drummond. I was there and surfed that day. The waves were very big and any one who has seen Ron Drummond would have never forgotten him. He is most likely the tallest surfer ever in the world as a well muscled giant of a man who was perhaps at
least 7 foot tall, in a canoe! I have thought about this and it was probably because a surf board not large enough for him to surf existed.
When it gets big at the TJ Sloughs it breaks out on several locations on
this ancient river mouth of piles of sumerged large cobble stones from
glacial ages forming a reef or shoal that reaches out for a distance
longer than a mile. Beyond the surfing reef it continues where kelp
attaches itself forming large beds in deeper water..
The Outside Reef, a mile out is frequently the surfed area, although
The Mystery Breaks, another half mile out only breaks infrequently in
the largest sets at low tide. Dempsey called this "The Bone Yard
"because you could not get a line up and most likely would get trashed
inside by giant soup 20 feet high. This day Ron Drummond went out there
in The Bone Yard and disappeared in the deep troughs of waves. I would
see him again almost two hours later being battered like a tiny cork by
the soup in his canoe totally awash. He had a dumbfounded look on his
face with wide eyes that had seen terror and near death.
He remarked, " I have been surfing all around the world and never have
seen waves so big and so far out. I took off down this mountain and
picked up speed like freight train at full throttle roaring into a black hole tunnel!" His estimate noted the waves were 30 to 40 feet high and what he went through is
unimaginable to surfers and non surfers alike.
I would see Ron a few more times in my life, once in his territory
around Dana Point and some reunions. Truly an impressive dedicated
waterman never to be forgotten, especially this day he vividly recalled.
Also from John: Anna (Trent) Moore was trusted with all of Bud Browne's vintage film archives after his death and has edited unseen footage into a new
production to be shown at the La Paloma theater on Saturday, February
20th at 6:30 and 9:00 PM in Encinitas. Many of Bud's and Buzzy's old
friends will be there. A WAKE UNTO THE BLUE

From Michael Blum:

From David Pu'u: The link (below) is to a blog entry on a rescue event that took place on the freeway in OC awhile back. Shawn Alladio affected the rescue. The victim has survived and is doing well and has recently just completed what we think may be the last of his skin grafts.
Shawn is getting an award for heroism today from the OC Fire Authority. Pretty rare for a civilian to get one of these. It may be a first. I know she hates this sort of thing (I won't attend as a result of that) but it is a remarkable story involving someone who serves our community of surfers. Thought that you guys may want a heads up.
Shawn and I are just back from training the USCG STAN team in Oregon. It is comprised of five Advanced Rescue Swimmers, who are the lead standardization test officers and now front a new program that will serve as the foundation for PWC use by the USCG. That course and what it says, is going to go a long way in establishing credibility and standards for PWC ops.

From Gary Sahagen: The Twenty-Third Annual HB Longboard Crew Pier Paddle will be held on February 6, 2010 at 10am. ** This change from Sunday to Saturday is the first time in the long history of the Pier Paddle Race that it will not happen on a Sunday. The reason for the change was to better align with the Surf City USA® Marathon which has become one of the Longboard Crew's partners in this event. The change will allow marathon runners to compete in both running and paddling. Special awards are planned for any participants who accomplish that feat. For further information and to inquire about loaner boards please email info@hblongboardcrew.org
The race is open to all ages with one open division. First through sixth place finishers will be awarded. All participants should use a standard surfboard for the race. No racing type paddle boards will be allowed. Boards need to be less than twelve feet as a maximum. The race starts at 10am sharp. Entries will be accepted on a first come-first served basis to 100 maximum starting at 9am on the beach. The Huntington Beach Longboard Crew suggests a $5.00 donation unless your club dues are paid up for 2010.
The next day is February 7, 2010 which is Superbowl Sunday and the Surf City USA® Marathon which will start at 6:30am. The after-party for the marathon will start early at the beer garden which will be hosted by the Huntington Beach Longboard Crew .

From Skipper Funderburg: Author of Surfing on the Cape Fear Coast. He recently discovered a 1907 surfing photo ( carolinabeach.net ) postcard view of people surf bathing on the ocean side of the Sea Shore Hotel including a surfer on a Hawaiian styled body board on Wrightsville Beach . (Slides from Fales collection: http://wwwtmpapps.nhcgov.com/lib/history/fales/index.htm )

1907, 1909 & 1913 postcards all use the same popular photograph. Crop and blowup:

Another from the collection:
This one reminds me of my belief that bodysurfing and boat surfing/canoeing etc. have likely been going on since the beginning of time or thereabouts and in many places...about the time humans crawled up the beach from the sea. Maybe they didn't exactly crawl.
